Belly heat necessary? (I know it's been asked but, please post it)

Yellowconda12 Nov 13, 2005 07:44 PM

I am asking this because my friend who doesn't have any belly heat for any of his snakes doesn't seem to think that it is necessary for digestion. I have heard if you keep the whole cage an even higher temp like in the eighties, that you don't need a basking or belly heat site in the enclosure,.. polease any input, do you use belly heat if so how much, if not what is the alternitive

Your cage/enclosure/tub should have some kind of temperature gradient with hot and cool spots for your snake to go to thermalregulate - keeping the whole cage at one temperature does not allow the snake the ability to do this. And snakes do tend to prefer to have a bit of belly heat. How much - I tend to keep my warm area around 87* with a hot spot of about 90*-92*.
