North India Herp question

undfun Nov 13, 2005 09:51 PM

Help!

I'll be in Delhi for the last 2 weeks of November. I will probably have time to get out and about, take the train or hire a driver to go to one of the parks/preserves within4-5 hours of the city.

I have no idea where to go to see herps - any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks - you can email me at:

I don't know remember how far north of Delhi it is, but Bharatpur sanctuary is pretty nice. They have pythons there and the guides know where they bask on warm winter mornings. It can be quite cool in northern India in the winter however so seeing them isn't guaranteed.

We were in Rhajastan in December 1989 and I saw very few herps. I wasn't looking all that hard however.

Rice padis (if they have them up there - it is pretty dry) can be productive spots to look for cobras and ratsnakes (Ptyas) as well.

Calotes can be seen basking all over the place.
