Gold Tegus Hibernating?

SanClementeSnake Nov 13, 2005 10:35 PM

I just purchased two gold tegus. I have built a large enclosure for them with hides and live plants. The substrate is very deep and they only come out for short basks and then burrow for about 95% of the time. I've heard they hibernate n matter the temp. They are eatng but small amounts. Thanks for your help.

Gold tegus are a tropical form of tegu, that is imported from THE northern part of South America.they dont hibernate .They bermate only. I would say that the Wet seasone is what would make them Breed, or bermate. Take care Russ

Brumate is pretty much the same thing as hibernate, and as an equatorially located species, it should be doing NEITHER.

Are they burrowers? Why are they burrowing?

Yes, they are burrowers. Burrowing provides access to a more thermally stable microclimate, shelter from predators, shelter from rain, a place to sleep, an alternative place to lay eggs in absence of termite mounds, etc. Burrowing doesn't equate hibernating.
