Bug Eyes in Leucistic Texas Rats - Is this "trait" variable?

david_roach Nov 14, 2005 02:10 AM

Howdy to all! I have a question about the "bug-eyed" trait in leucistic Texas Ratsnakes. Is this trait is variable, or is it an either/or? Do all bug-eyed rats have protruding, bulbous eyes, or is it something that can vary in severity with some animals having "slightly" bug eyes?

I was just given this nippy, little leucistic Texas rat that a buddy of mine picked up at the San Antonio show. Since I haven't ever seen a bug-eyed specimen up close, it's hard to tell whether this little guy is bug-eyed or not. He certainly doesn't look like any of the extreme buggies I've seen on the net, but I just want to find out for sure. What does everyone think of this guy - bug eyes or not?

Thanks...David

From what I've seen at shows and in pet stores, yes, the trait is variable; I've seen moderate bug eyes all the way up to huge pop eyes that look like those black moor goldfish...Also, I agree with Dre, yours looks normal (although I always have trouble with baby snakes because their eyes are so large in proportion to their heads anyway...)...
