Burm Handling

oldrippy Nov 14, 2005 07:44 AM

I bought a Baby Burmese about three weeks ago the day I got him he seemed alright and I held him in my hands but ever since I got him home he freaks out and strikes at me if I go to pick him up. But here is kinda the break down since I got him. The first week I got him I just let him get use to every thing in his cage and I fed him a mouse and he seemed fine. The Second Week I started attempting to pick him up by hand but he hisses if I touch him so I would use my snake hook to get him and he doesn't hiss at all when I use that. This week if just been using the hook just to avoid snake bite. Does my snake just hate me or does he just need more time to get use to be handled or what?

Any suggestions and advise greatley appreciated

A little nippiness is to be expected. Just handle frequently and most likely he will calm down. I have seen very few burmese that still had a habit of biting at a larger size. Hissiness it also to be expected. Many times from what I have noticed with the young burms I have handled is that the hissing usually outlasts the biting. With regular handling and care he should mellow out and become calm.

Good Luck with your Burm.

Chris

It will most likely grow out of it.
My burms still hiss though...they are 11 and 13ft. They usually quit once i get them out

Mine is about 5ft, I got her when she was 2ft. She lets me handle her with no hassle, But I have to admit she can catch me off guard. The other day I was handling her and she seemed fine, until I went to put her back and she tagged me.

LOL, maybe she wasn't ready to go back just yet. Sorry, not funny. Is there something you might be doing differently those times when she does strike?
