Shedding Questions

I was wondering how rapidly a shed can come on.

I handled her yesterday afternoon and her skin was glossy and her eyes were completely clear. This morning I was changing her water and noticed that her entire body appears much duller (almost frosted in appearance) and her eyes are noticeably opaque when caught at an angle. She seems less coordinated and sluggish but still flicks her tongue constantly.

I've had her for a little over 2 weeks and she has eaten 4 times. She shed during shipment on the way here. She has definitely gained in girth if not length in that time.

Thanks for any help.

It really depends on the age of the snake. Younger snakes will shed more frequently than adults. My younger snakes shed about once every 3-4 weeks. Sometimes more often, as they grow in spurts. My 03 female sheds about once every 6-8 weeks.

4 feedings in a 2 weeks time might be a bit excessive. Generally, one feeding every 5-7 days is sufficient. I know is really neat to watch them eat, and sometimes difficult to refrain from feeding too often (i was the same way). But overfeeding may lead to a fat, unhealthy snake, ultimately shortening its lifespan. I'M NOT TRYING TO SLAM YOU, its just that 4 feedings in 2 weeks kinda stuck out to me. I'm sure you snake is doing great and has a great owner.

Yeah, I've been thinking about slowing her down a bit. She got stuck to duct tape the first day I had her (figures) and I've been trying to get her to outgrow her old skin (the left over adhesive spots are getting pretty dirty). Initially I was worried that the experience and after-effects would kill her but now that she's been eating regularly I guess I'm less worried. I'll keep updating.

Thanks for the help.

You could try cleaning him off a bit with a little vegetable oil. So long as it didnt cause too much damage to the scales, then he should be okay. Should be better after another shed or two.
