that's alot of geckos for just starting out....Ron Tremper has LOTS of breeders, i don't know if any of use can match the number he has. female leos should be well over 6 months of age and well over 40g before you try breeding them. I would wait until the females are at least 8 months old before breeding tho.

my leo is 2 years old and i bred her for the first time this year. if i had my way, every female should be bred only after she was a year old and over 50g instead of 40. but i was giving the extremes i have heard...some people breed at 6 months and 40g which is not safe in my mind but it happens. my extreme would be no less than 8 months since i think a female is old enough to breed when she is a year or older. sorry, i should have been more clear.

Female leopard geckos should be at least 10 months old and over 40 grams before you breed them. Males can breed much earlier.

Steve,
how about an 8 month old 50 gram female? Most of my hold backs are between 8-10 months old when they hit 50 grams. I really feel that size and contitioning are the main factors when considering breeding. I feel the same way about breeding my dragons and my Rhacs. This is just my opinion based on my experiences.

Bill,

You have many years more experience than me and I absolutely can not argue that what works for you is wrong.

I have had females hit 50 at 6 months old. Would I breed them then? No. Would I breed them at 8 months? I'd have to take into consideration other factors as well before deciding, but generally I'd still be unwilling. 10 months? without a doubt for almost all situations provided that weight.

I like to see my leos stablize at a certain weight and length before breeding them. I feel 8 months is too early to predict what that weight will be, in most situations.

I see your point, and I'm by no means looking to argue with you. I know sometimes that is hard to understand in writing. I can tell you this, all species I have dealt with will continue to grow in size and weight even after being bred. I have never understood the warnings about stunting growth when breeding to young. I have witnessed continued growth after breeding many times. Just some food for thought.

I don't doubt that they will continue to grow, but will they continue to grow at the same rate or to the same extent? I doubt it.

And don't worry, I'm not offended by anything you say! It was nice meeting you on Sunday and I think you're a good guy!

Females can breed around 8 months and 40 grams, but it is very hard on them and not recommended. You want to make sure they are fully mature, developed, and healthy before you even consider pairing them with a male. This is kind of a strange analogy, but not many people think a 13-year-old girl (human) should get pregnant even though her body is able to make it happen. Breeding your females to soon will compromise their health and their babies'.
