New leo, not eating.

ShakesJC Nov 14, 2005 03:09 PM

Ive got a leo that is not eating. I have had her for a week and a half and she is showing very little interest in food. Every day at the same time I offer her crickets, I have also offered mealworms and waxworms(All gutloaded and dusted proper). Do you think she is just stressed and still adjusting. We dont handle her or bother her at all except for daily water changes and feeding. Temp is good. Very fat little girl, her tail is almost as wide as her head. Im thinking she's most likely still adjusting as she has showed a little interest other than chasing a cricket for a few steps. Should i not worry till she starts loosing weight?

Shakes, it would be helpful if you would go ahead and post your setup and actual temperatures. What kind of cage do you have her in, what kind of substrate? How old is she? Do you know how much she weighs? What are the temps in the warm and cool side of her cage? What was the previous owner feeding her? Its easier to eliminate potential problems and answer your question fully with this information.

Sorry bout that. SHe's in a 20L. Substrate is paper towels. Age is UNK most likely young adult. Weight unk. She has 86 degree hot side 76 degree cool side. 72 at night. She was bought from a LPS and was being fed a diet of mealies and crickets.

No problem! I am assuming you meant 72 on the cool side at night, and not 72 on the warm side, right? The warm side should be consistent night and day (a few degrees difference is not a problem) unless you are trying to brumate her... but I don't know why you would be since you're obviously not breeding her.

The warm side could be warmer, the closer you can get her to 90 the better. If she feels too warm she'll go to the cool side, but its good to have that heat/energy available to her.

If you temperatures on your warm side are dipping down to 72 at night, I'd say that's why she's not eating. Also, the warmer it is the more energy she's getting and the more active and hungry she's going to be. If you warm side temps are consistent then I would say that you don't have anything to worry about thus far. She's probably reacting to the change in her enviroment.
Does she have runny stools or anything else abnormal going on?

No stools at all yet. I have a heat lamp that is my primary source of heat. I started having both lamps on in the daytime to get the heat up to 90 on the warm side during the day. On my next trip to the LPS i plan on getting a ceramic no-light heat bulb so i can have that hot side going 24-7 as you suggested. I also need to get a new thermometer(I read your post on them). Would you suggest leaving some crickets in the tank overnight to see if she will eat them. I know they can annoy a gecko but im not sure if it may be worth a shot. Its another feeding right now and she's isnt leaving her hide yet....
