What types of snakes stay small? (around 2 feet, max feet long.)

There are quite a few. Some of the more common ones as captives are the sandboas and rubber boas. Adult females of some species can get to almost 3 feet but males generally remain much smaller.

My boyfriend is thinking about getting a snake, so a good "starter snake" would be good. (I've never had a snake either, the only reptile I have and have ever had is a leopard gecko.)

Most of the smallest snakes can be difficult feeders and if its your first snake your best bet is a Corn snake and they get around 4-5 feet average. Check out the corn snake forum

look a bit thin, especially for as long as it is in the pic? Not meaning to butt in or sound like a know it all but its just what struck me when I looked at the pics, might just be the camera angle or maybe my snakes are just too fat...

That cornsnake looks like it is or has been starved. Cornsnakes shouldn't show a keel along the middle of the back like that.

You might want to consider a rosy boa. Get a male. They generally stay under 3 feet. Males of some populations (such as the Mexican Rosy boas) don't exceed 30 inches.
