The mouse is probably thinking "He might get me but I am going to bite his ass and try to kill him before he kills me"

Give him the benefit of the doubt! Could it be that this animal has refused food for several months and out of desperation he is trying live? Could it be that he just received this animal from someone less than knowledgable about the proper way to feed an animal so he is trying to wean the animal to Frozen/thawed?

Before making comments that immediately assumes guilt give him the benefit of the doubt.

Griz

PS Just so some of you don't jump to more conclusions, I only feed f/t and agree that this is the only way to go unless drastic measures are called for. If he's doing this solely for the cool factor or he's too lazy to take the time to switch to f/t then yes, he deserves the comments.

He's doing this as a last resort based on the enthusiasm in his post. He's delighted, obviously. Which hey, when I FIRST got into snakes, I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen but I quickly grew out of that after educating myself. So hopefully, he'll read some responses and educate himself.

He's thinking: If I have the opportunity, I'm going to do to this boa, what my cousin Mickey "Gnaws on snakes" Mouse did to this ball python...

And yes, the owner of this ball python reported that a live MOUSE did this. So, brilliant care you're taking of your animals there buddy. Keep up the good work!

THat's one vicious mouse! But I guess animals tend to do that when they're about to DIE.

I totally agree, feeding live is not a good thing. If it comes to last resort and they don't take anything else, I usually use a plier while holding the live mouse, so at least it's held from hurting the snake.

The attitude isn't that necessary is it Jonathan? There is a VAST difference between feeding live and what obviously took place with the ball python in your pictures. Do you think that happened while the keeper was standing by? I highly doubt it! I do have a female Leopard boa that REFUSES frozen thawed, has for two years now.....do I let her die or feed her live? I offer F/T all the time as I would much prefer she feed on F/T, but I am forced to resort to live..NO FRESH KILLED EITHER! So, I feed her and STAND BY until the rat is DEAD and being eaten, then I go on my way. Feeding live prey alone does not result in the outcome you just displayed....Complete keeper negligence is what caused that outcome. As far as the original post, whatever, that was just poor judgement IMO of what is an appropriate picture to show on a public forum. Take care!

Feed your own snakes however you want. Freedom, that's part of where we live.

Wow that mouse really went to town on that snake. I assumed I would get some bad responses but I figured they would be more towards being humane to mice, Anyway everyone should be happy to know that picture was taken some time ago, shortly after I got this snake. I no longer feed it anything live. I fed it the first time or 2 live food and even when it eats now I stay and watch it until it was done. Also When I was younger I had a Burmese Python. I left some rats in the cage while I went out of town “Not knowing any better” I came home to a $4,000 vet bill and a tore up snake. The snake did survive. This is why I stay and watch all my snakes while they eat. Anyway calm down like I said the snake no longer eats live food and the picture was taken some time ago.

Just curious, did that snake survived?

jasonw Nov 15, 2005 02:37 PM

Yes as I mentioned in my last post the Python survived after the $4,000 vet bill All of my snakes feed on live food for the first feeding or 2, No real excuse thats just always worked good for me. The only exception is my young snkes that feed on pinkies. They all eat live food and get transfered to FT when they get bigg enough to eat anything but pinkies.
