bullfrogs and other animals

danielle4girls4 Nov 15, 2005 12:29 PM

I have a bullfrog and a roughback newt together in a 55 gal. tank w/ both land and water. The 2 of them have been together for about a year and a half, w/ no problems. Is there any other kind of animal I could safely put in the tank w/ them? Neither the frog or newt ever go on the land. It would be nice to have something that would use both land and water. thanks, Danielle

mixing species can be tricky. with most animals the rule is "if it fits in my mouth, its food". im guessing your bullfrog keeps his head above water most of the time whereas the newt is always under the water and out of his sight, right? so he hasnt eaten him because he is not hunting for things under the water. how much land is there? how deep is the water? the problem is that another animal will have to stay bigger then the bullfrog to not be eaten by it. hwo big is the bullfrog, in inches from nose to rump?what are the bullfrog's eating habits? does he just jump onto the land and grab all the crickets? what are you feeding him? how is the land setup? im not trying to find flaws in your setup, i am trying to figure out if there is something that i think would be a safe bet.

The bullfrog does usually keep only her eyes above water. She rarely brings her whole body out of the water. The newt never comes out of the water and they hang out in the same side of the tank together constantly. As far as how much land, it is a 55 gal. tank 1/2 land 1/2 water. The water is fairly deep, I'd say half way up the tank. The frog and newt both eat crickets together. They will come in the more shallow area of the tank to eat. They really seem to like each other. It would be nice to get another creature that would be more happy to stay on the land, but wouldn't get eaten by the frog. Thanks, Danielle

I'm pretty sure that sooner or later the bullfrog will become large enough to eat the newt and it WILL eat the newt. Once they get large they will eat anything that they can fit in their mouths.
