Handling GTPS ???

Sarge2004 Nov 15, 2005 12:51 PM

For those of you that have experience with GTPs, what is your opinions on handling? I have a two year old CBB Aru type male that is tame. The times I have handled him he has not bit or struck ever. He is very easy to work around in the cage when on his perch. Also, what is the best way to get a GTP off of a perch when coiled around it? I have tried to gently hook him but that does not work. Can you unwrap them starting at the tail like other snakes? I have heard not to do that with GTPs. Thanks for your help-Bill.

Bill-
Generally speaking all GTPs are unique individuals and some (like your Aru type) have easy going, well mannored dispositions. I personally don't handle my GTPs that much, and I'm sure others will address their particular opinions (which may vary) on this. Regarding "how to remove a GTP off its perch".....I usually remove the entire perch first and then depending on the "age" and size of the chondro I let them willingly crawl off the perch. For neonates and small chondros you can gently nudge them with the eraser end of a pencil to motivate them to crawl off their perch.

My large cages perches are not removable now. I finally screwed them in after them coming off for the third time. I just pick up her body, and then let her start crawling. Once her tail unhooks, I take her the rest of the way. I've found that if I try to tickle her tail off the perch, or move it in any way, she'll just winch herself on tighter. Waiting seems to do the trick. I usually handle mine once a week or so. She's VERY tame, and seems to enjoy being out. If I open the door to put her back, she'll crawl back out, or sit by the open door with her head out for a while.

The female I had was only two and she hated being handled. Never bit or struck, but a *real* wiggleworm about being handled.

My old male makes a gopher tortise look like a greyhound, lol. He is so mellow I can do anything with him. If I didn't know better I'd swear that snake trusts me. :P

I think I have the female version of your snake Morgana! After I'm finished hadling her and go to put her back, she'll keep her head out the door and hang out checking things out. Then when she goes back in, she will take a few tours of her enclosure and then park herself by the door for an hour or so before moving back to the back corner in her normal place.
