How are you draining?

bigmansm Nov 15, 2005 08:01 PM

I can understand if you have a custom built cage, but my cage is a store bought type and i was trying not to take it apart to drill holes in the bottom of the plexiglass.

If i just drill a bunch of small holes in the bottom of the plexi, the water wont really drain because areas where there aren't any holes will have standing water...

I was thinking if i bought some plexiglass and kind of made like a pyramid bottom so he water will flow to the middle or sides, then drain out completely. But this seems like a bit extra work and maybe a little more challenging then i imagine.

Any tips? I wanna do it right ONCE

Maybe cut a slit against the entire one side of the bottom sheet. Then have the cage so when it is set up, its leaning on an angle towards that side?

.... will work.
Not sure where you get your cages from, but none of my all screen enclosures have plexiglass bottoms. Is your enclosure all plexiglass?

I'm new to the "cham" thing, but my cage has a plastic tray basin 3-4" deep. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the front right corner (door end) and put the other end on a slanted piece of wood to force the water to the drain end. I forced a 1/4" piece of airline tubing in the hole I drilled and it hangs down into a gallon plastic ice cream container. I drilled an identical hole in the lid of this container and pushed the other end of the tubing into it. I used a 3M Command self-stick cable/wire holder to keep the tube in place on the tray. I also use a piece of coconut panel placed over the tubing to absorb a lot of the water. I empty the container daily and squeeze the excess moisture out of the coconut panel.

Hey,

An irrigation system is not always necessary. If you are using a drip system, just use a small deli cup to catch the water. If you have a misting system, or are using a spray bottle, let the botom fully dry before another misting. We now have an irrigation system on all of our cages, but didn't for a very long time. The easiest way, as Willhayward said, is to slant the cage towards one side slightly, and make a slit on that side. Also, even if you have an irrigation system, I wouldn't make it "rain" heavily, unless the botom is very clean, or else the bacteria will spread throughout the entire bottom of the cage.

Well im thinking a very sharp slant is needed to make sure all the wat drains into that slit. Also, wouldnt there me some left over water just kind of standing? Obviously the heat is not to much on the floor, so i am worried about if it iwll dry up enough.

My drip system is a little bit more fancy then most you see.
I have a 10inch diameter ring of tubing with small holes dirlled in it. So when i open the vlave on the bottle the water drips everywhere acting like a rain. thats why i need some good drainage.
