What's the truth about egg-binding?

vonfischer713 Nov 15, 2005 08:43 PM

Ive read alot about Females becoming egg-bound and dieing after breeding. Supposedly if a female is not bred during their first period of receptivity, they will become eggbound if bred later on? What is the truth about this? and when are females usualy first receptive? I have a male female pair both just under 6months old and the female has not yet shown any of the so called receptive colors. _josh topp

Some females are sexually receptive after 3 1/2 months, but usually this is between 5 to 8 months. If she doesnt show the signs of being receptive, take her out of the males habitat and try later on, it'll eventually work.

Females, whether they are with a male or not, WILL become eggbound. They will just not be fertile if there is no male present. The eggs will be smaller, and easier to pass, but the same procedures will need to be followed. If the eggs are not passed, due to improper conditions (lighting, heat, improper subtrate), the female will die.
