For years now, I've used incandescent bulbs (15W) in my tanks for heat. I use a rheostat to control the temps. I can put my hand, and leave it there, right on the bulb and it doesn't get uncomfortably hot. I always bought the bulbs at our grocery store. My wife (the penny pincher in the family) recently pointed out how much cheaper they were at the local home improvement store, and I bought some. I just noticed that they get really hot. So for your infomation, I have found that the GE (General Electric) bulbs don't get hot, but the Sylvania bulbs do. So just a heads up, if your bulbs feel hot to the touch, try a different brand. If all else fails build a bulb guard.
