Please help-- my Sally is sick

creepypiercedchk Nov 16, 2005 02:56 AM

My Eastern Spadefoot Sally is sick. I think she has laryngitis(sp?). When I used to pick her up she'd croak, but now she acts like she's trying to croak but only a pathetic squeak is coming out. She's acting normal otherwise, but her croak is gone. What is wrong with Sally??

I have some bad news for you.... I dont know what is wrong with her or if their is even anything wrong.. how long have you had her? some only croke certin times of the year, Also... Females do not crok... is if in fact she did croke when you picked her up.. then it is a male and not a female like you thought.

I know Sally is a female because she doesn't have a throat pouch like the males. Her croak isn't as deep as theirs (when she does croak). Ive had her about a month

I believe female spadefoots can croak, but the do not call like the males. But how do you know the frog does not have a throat pouch? It may just have never used it that you have seen. It is hard to tell if they have one or not just by looking at the deflated chin.

The most likely cause of the silent toad is a respitory infection. Does she seem to have a runny nose, wheezy breathing, or does she breath with a slightly open mouth?

Another cause could be some other type of bacterial or fungal infection that is affecting the animal's throat.

Double check your temps, humidity and water quality. Consider taking the frog to a vet.

Arg-- I wish I had the money to take Sally to the vet :-/

I've isolated her from the other spades, who seem to be doing just fine. Sally doesn't have any symptoms that you listed, other than being lethargic.

Is there anything I could give her to possible help the situation?

I can't believe I gave my toad my cold

I guess just wait and see what happens.
If it is just lethergic, it could be some sort of fungal or bacterial infection internally that you cannot see. If you havn't already, change out all the substrate and thouroughly wash all cage furniture to try to get rid of the pathogen. Try to keep her eating well and hope for the best. I don't know what else to do.
