Very Strange Collard Behavior Experience! Need Input!

Quantumhigh Nov 16, 2005 02:21 PM

Ok so I was sitting on my computer about 8 feet from my lizard tank. I see my lizard basking under his light, and he's doing a hickup like motion 2-3 time. I get up to get a better look whats going on.

His eyes are remained closed whole time and are puffing up or almost out. I also see some pink briefly but not his eyeball. At the same time, I'am trying to get a closer view. I think somthing like popped out of one of his eyes but could find anything. A second later the puffing was going and he opened his eyes back up. He acted like nothing happend. Both eyes looked fine maybe a bit watery. Right now (10mins later) he is jumping around and just perched himself at the high spot in the tank.

Has anyone else had an experience like this before please share it.

Thanks All,
Aaron

They will puff like that when getting ready to shed, or to get some debris from the eye. Just keep YOUR eyes on him

If the whole body was puffing up while he was doing the popping of the eyes, than I would say he's getting ready to shed.

But yeah, they will also (pop the eyes out, kinda weird looking the first time ya see them do it) to rid them of sand, dirt whatever.

i have also seen them release salt through their eyes, and they puff up really big when they do that, but usually once a day i see at least one of my many lizards puffing their eyes out and have seen the pink eyelid thing too

The first time I saw that it scared the h#ll out of me--I'll never forget it. But mine do that all the time now. I've never really been able to figure out why; it's just a collared thing, I guess. I have seen them pop their eyes out and then rub them on a rock as if trying to remove something, but I've also seen them do it when nothing appeared to be irritating their eyes, too. I could only guess what it's about, but I'd probably be wrong.
