This article promaotes that beardies are venomous and carry the same venom that rattlesnakes do but with a primative delivery system.

Oh no now we all have to run out and get Venomous reptile permits

No really do not be surprised to see people try to classify Bearded Dragons as Venomous reptiles, that are not safe as pets. There are always people out there that will not use science properly and read into things or use it to their own ends.

Just a heads up

drunkmike Nov 16, 2005 03:32 PM

arent eastern beardies wild ones that have nothing to do with the bloodlines that we have here as pets?

rujonesin Nov 16, 2005 03:47 PM

did basically say that they were mostly harmless and owners shouldn't be afraid of their pets.

It's promoting the idea that the lizards (in this case the eastern beardie) are capable of carrying components of the proteins that go into the overall makeup of rattlesnake venom - NOT that it carries the exact SAME venom. Venomous snakes are not limited to their venom being just this or that (hemotoxic, neurotoxic, etc.), but rather venoms are a cocktail mixture of a bunch of proteins - different mixtures do different things. It just happens that one of the primary ingredients in rattlesnake venom was isolated in the eastern beardie. Heck any animal with saliva can be deemed venomous - it is a combination of proteins used to break down something. Humans are quite venomous if you think about it.

And now the rest of the story. Here is a link to a post on the topic with excerps from the study and from what I understand is by one of the lab geeks that was involved in the study. (that part I may be wrong about) http://www.venomdoc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=10760#10760

also when you look at the article I posted above, make sure you go down to the bottom of the page they quote-unquote have pics of the infamous glands

God, I loved that. Thank you PHWyvern!

I'm an elementary principal who got a beautiful beardie for her school. You can't believe what I had to go through from my school district's safety officer to be allowed to keep it! He actually read through the NY State Safety guide for school pets with me over the phone! He's reading down through the list of unsafe pets....and he says...oh...ocelot....what's an ocelot? (I was dying.) Anyway, he said I couldn't have any VENOMOUS pets. LOL

I'm glad to read that my beardie is no more venomous than my school safety officer! LOLOL

now come on here, you are actually going to believe PHWyvern? I think he/she (sorry) is just in on the big conspiracy with the beardies! They want us to believe they are safe until they are ready... then they are going to try to take over! LOL!

Really though, thanks for the info PHWyvern! My son's science teacher gets everything wrong in class (actually tried to tell the class my wife was wrong and the big green lizard she took to show the class was a bearded dragon not a green iguana)... Imagine what damage she could do with the article information! Now if she could just prove that Dart Frogs have fangs and are really venomous... and that ball pythons do indeed have no teeth, then maybe she would be slightly credible.

That's the problem with the media when it comes to hard science such as this study that's being done. They take so much out of context which distorts things and once public imaginations run wild lol.

I remember a teacher trying to tell her class that snakes were invertebrates because they had no bones and had an exoskeleton. gee go figure.

well what the problem is....

you get some scientist who is studying something for 20 years (and knows what he/she is talking about) who tells some dumb as$ reporter/journalist/magazine writer some bit of information....at which point the reporter/something/something has no clue what they are saying...if fact that reporter has missed work the last three days and if they don't get an article out they are fired! so they print some crap out like beardies are venomous.

should i get a permit for the daddy-long-legs in my closet?

I have an uncle who has a friend who has a cousin who knows a guy who had a son who dated this girl whos father heard of a guy that once knew a boy that was abducted by an alien and when he grew up he was bitten by a BD like the one in the movie holes... well he died. IT MUST BE TRUE!!!

Wow an intresting article, would it be considered venom, if it is due to toxins found in the mouth? Because if the Komodo dragon, didnt eat carrion, then it wouldnt have the dangerous bacteria in its mouth, so is it venomous. Does diet effect venom?
