possible evolution to the Nigerian scam notes??

rainbowsrus Nov 16, 2005 03:24 PM

Hey I received this today:

hi seller, i do like to purchase this reptile for keep in my private
zoo/home.i will sign out cashier's check or money order if you like it. get
back to me if you still have it available for sale and provide me with
your name and address to mail out the payment to you right away.here is
my email:xxxxx100@yahoo.com
janice.

(I X'd out the email address in case it is legit)

Anybody else seen this? I replied with :

Hi Janice, please send the payment in the form of a cashiers check or money order to:

Dave Colling
C/O xxxxxxx (x'd out for privacy)
xxxxxxxxxxx (x'd out for privacy)
San Jose, CA 95138

(this is my mother-in-laws address, I use it as my mailing address)

Or you could paypal me at this email address. If using paypal, please add $4.00 to cover the paypal transaction fee

For cashiers check/money order, will have to wait till the check clears both banks, Sorry for this but there have been a number of unscrupulous buyers using phoney cashiers checks and money orders lately. This could take 2 or 3 weeks

We'll see if this scares them off!! Hate to scare off a valid buyer but this note seemed wrong, no questions about the snake.

It reads from bottom to top....complete morons.

Sorry. I don't deal like that. I need a number and a confirmed address before I send out my info. I have no idea who you are and this appears to be a scam. Like I said before, if you would like to purchase these animals, send me your name, address and phone number. If you don't follow my rules then there is no deal. It's very simple.

dont bother about my address that is available with my shipper.once the money gets to my shipper the reptile will be pickup ASAP.all my infos are with my shipper so you just send the money to him after you have cashed it and the reptile will be picked up.i give you my word.
so send yuor name and address to mail out the money order to you right away.

Do you have an address and phone number? I will accept a USPS money order. Please respond back with address to be delivered to and phone number. As soon as I get that from you and verify I will forward my address so you can send the MO.

Thanks-

Brett

This is a new form of scam everyone is doing. They get your address and information and sell it. I hate it, it happens to me on ebay as well.

I was sent a Certified check supposedly from England for an $800.00 snake the check was for $3500.00. He wanted me to hurry up and deposit the check and western union the balance. I called the bank that the check was drawn on which was in Texas (funny huh)! they told me it was a fake. I only except postal money orders (which have been faked also but easier to find out if they are at the post office counter make sure you ask them to check it each time because it will come back against you) Paypal and credit cards. Also, They all seem to use Yahoo as a provider. Be careful and very cautious good luck Scott

Talk to your bank when you get the MO. If the buyer offers you a lot of extra money to cover shipping etc, you know to stay away.
I had a check come in recently. My bank knows me well and we went through things as usuall, it even cleared. However, a week after clearing I was called that it was fake. I was suspicious so I left the money untouched for (what would have been) the recommended 30 days. By bank said they would check things out for me ahead of time from know on. Nothing bad happened, the money was obviously removed from my account by the bank though.

Yeah, usually when a guy doesn't want to give you his name, number and address I find it a bit fishy. Not too hard to spot these scammers anymore. They are dumber than dogs--t!!!

boamorphs1 Nov 17, 2005 09:54 AM

You can't assume that just because they give you their name and number that they are legit. I had one email me his name and a legit phone number but once I mentioned that I was aware of scams going on, I never heard from him again. The first "red flag" should come up once there is talk of sending more then the asking price. I also tell them that the funds must clear first because of te scams that go around and I usually don't hear from them again. The more we tell them we are on to their game to sooner we can get them out of here.

I had one person actually throw out a huge story about his ill father and such. This was the most believable one I've ever been sent. Nothing standard about it at all. But, after a few emails we got to the "my shipper will pick it up" part. Hmmm...now where have I heard that before?? Then the "Mo will be larger than the amount" part. All through this he keeps making small talk about his father's health. If I didn't already know and have experience with these scams, he might have had me...then again, the idea of anyone sending me more money than I'm asking and want the rest in return just sounds shady as sin.

So where do you disagree?

LauraV Nov 17, 2005 08:05 PM

I've received a ton of the "normal" type scams...but, the one I described above took a lot more thought than poo is capable of.
