incomplete shedding...what humidity %?

nealnkc Nov 16, 2005 03:30 PM

What humidity % do I need to try to keep my air at for my bp? Also, I have a 40 gal tank with a screen lid for the enclosure, what can I do to "enclose" the top a little more, I think that is part of the problem. I have my heat lamp sitting on the screen on the left side of the lid, too.

Thanks.

For shedding you need somewhere between 60-80% humidity. Any other time about 60% is fine. You can try covering about half to three quarters of the screen top with a damp towel, or you might replace it completely with a piece of wood cut to fit with a screen covered hole for the light. Hope this helps.

I have had a screen top for my ball pythons and kings and some corns. Whats the humidity now?,Are you keeping the light on for heat or just for light or for both? Whats the substrate? If you leave the basking/heat lamp on for to long and you have a substrate like aspen or newspaper then the humidity will be sucked out easily especially since you have a screen top. This happened to me also, what you need to do is mist the cage 2-3 times a day, if that doesn't work make a humidity box (if you don't know what that is look at some posts below). Or you can switch to a substrate like spaghnum moss or cypress mulch. Or you could replace the heat lamp with a lower watage bulb and get an undertank heater, or you can put a towel over half the screen top and that should help. Best bet is to make a humidity box/hide.

Well, most of the time it's at ~50%, so it needs to come up some. During shedding, I make an effort to spray the aquarium more, but working 8 hours a day makes it hard. I'll probably cut a piece of wood to fit, as mentioned. It has reptibark substrate, and a LARGE water dish. I use an UTH and the light for heat.

Well then the problem has to be the screen top. You can either put a towel over half of it and then mist the cage OR you could make a humidity box which is much more better and less work. All it requires is some sort of plastic bowl/box (like the ones you get from food stores) and some wet spaghnum moss or paper towels that are damp. It really is easy. My snakes are at 60-70 humidity with a screen top and with the lights off, they are on aspen. The ONLY time the tank loses moisture is because of the heat lamp and sometimes it can go from 65% to 30%. I don't know maybe it's because of where I live that the humidity is good in the tank all the time. Anyway make a humidity hide, you can leave it in there when she's gonna shed or 24/7 just remember to mist the moss.
