What exactly is or makes a derma ball?
I can obviously tell its different, but....
how does it come about? genetic?
Def. freakin wierd.

shinysnakeskin Nov 16, 2005 10:52 PM

okay i know theres ALOT of talk about this Derma Ball, and by me asking this question i hope i do not create this big ripple on this forum...
jeeze im not sure how to word it... so im going to be blunt... how come people do not like this ball python with missing scales?
my intention is not to create a big argument iam just curious because i have seen pictures of this snake before and think its kinda interesting and i have seen "heated" debates also and im just wondering why?

its going to get ugly........again.....

bps516 Nov 17, 2005 07:44 AM

I have nothing against the little guy at all nor anyone that doesn't care for him, but everytime there is a posting on him things seem to get ugly (DO NOT insert a joke about the derma here please!). It is going to come up again and again, maybe we need a forum for either the derma or for known fight insigating topics in general. ...Can't we all just get along? (said right before a piece of sky falls and crushes me!)

Heres what I don't get. I don't like spiders, yea they look good but with the head wobble thing and all I just don't like them. Others have said the samething, yet when ever someone post a pic of a spider, no one says anything about it.Some don't like them, and some do like them. Yet when ever the darma ball is posted about, everyone who does not like it has to put there two cents in, call it names, say its deformed.

Let me ask this, what worse? missing some scales, or neurogical disorder that wont even let them hold there heads still?

As with everything else some like it some don't, but you don't have to put it down, or call it names.

toshamc Nov 17, 2005 02:37 PM

Using your scenario you can look at it two ways:

1. Which is worse being born with down syndrome or born without hands and a nose (remember the derma is also missing heat pits)? Both very unfortunate wouldn't you say?

2. People don't breed spiders (or carmels) to get the neurogical disorder or kinks it is a freak occurance possibly associated in the genetics. Same cannot be said for the Derma.

Yes no name calling, very good!!!

Now about #1, to tell the truth I could not answer that, I thought about it and just can't say, one way or anothr. So I askrd my sisters boyfriend, he said he would rather of been born with no hands or nose, then down syndrome. And i'm sure if you were to ask others you get about a 50-50 split, so it is hard to answer.

Also I thought it was proven that the heat pits are not the scales that are around them, but the skin under the scales, I mean he eats, and everything so the heat pit thing is not realy a big deal, or did I miss something?

#2 your right! no one that I have ever heard of is trying to breed wobble heads. As far as I know it's just a side effect of the spider gene, not that, that has been proven or anything, it just looks like that to me.

Another thing, you can have a normal looking spider that does NOT have a wobble head, yet the offspring could show it, kinda of like het for wobble, with the darma, if you have one, you know it, you know you will pass it on, no question, no suprise, no up set cumstoners who now have wobbles even though they didn't ask for a wobble.

Either way you look at it, it still comes down to some like it some don't. I for one don't like the way it looks(and the guy who has it sometimes comes off like a ............), but I don't fell it's my place to put it or him down every time it is brought up.

bps516 Nov 17, 2005 02:42 PM

I just look at it black and white. I have a chronic illness, it is genetic. By definition I am deformed, mutant, morph (it is genetic and my children have a % chance of proving out with the same thing), what ever you want to call it. I think it all comes down to:

a) by breeding do you know that there is a chance of it being passed on?
b) does it effect the heath of the snake or its offspring?
c) how bad could the effect be?

Morals aside, it is too early in the history of some of these morphs to say that one way or another. I know I don't know jack about morphs other than the genetic issue, but trust me, I know the possible outcomes and how good or bad they can be. Is it right to create them? It is really too early to say concretely (outside of personal feelings with the moral issues). Time and actual data will settle all of it one way or the other. Then you can say morally if it is right. I do think though that people who breed and sell morphs should have the responsablity to explain to buyers exactly what having a morph means good and bad, even if it is nothing more than a genetic explaination as to the possiblity of future breed problems.

Like I said I don't know about the snakes other than what genetic traits mean good or bad. And that is with a 20 years of extensive studies.

And since I am sure it will come up or be asked- a) no I never wanted children (though I will never tell them that) and b) no neither have the same "deformity" I do.

Awesome!!!!!

LdyPayne Nov 17, 2005 03:49 PM

Interesting belly shot, it really makes the remaining scales look like beads, like a beaded lizard. One thing I wonder, is how it's mobility. The long belly scales are used to gain purchase when moving forward and keeping the snake from slipping backwards.

Personally I find this snake interesting and would love to see it in person. I am very curious as to how it feels, would it be a soft leathery feel or more like velvet or suade.

IN my opinion the derma ball is no different than hairless rats, mice, cats or dogs that have become popular pets with many people.

zefdin Nov 17, 2005 03:49 PM

of your big print and boastful manner (I didnt say I agree with them).

However, you do have an awesome snake!!!

And the most ironic part of it all is that as soon as one of the "insiders" that is accepted as "worthy" by the naysayers aquires, either the snake you have posted or, if the Derma condition turns out to be genetic, one, it will suddenly become the morph to "die" for and be hailed as the second coming of the snake gods son!

Love the belly shot.

vip3ridae Nov 17, 2005 05:48 PM

LoL no I'm joking, I'm joking but serriously the derma's cute and you guys are jealous. The scenarios are quite interesting if you breed it, you will either get normal nice ball pythons OR all of them will have the same messed up chromosomes that this little bugger has and all will come out with there own look. Do I know this for sure? No but it's the most likely going to happen so I'll go with the latter. Let derma eat, drink,Breed, climb, watch TV because derma's being derma Also to not let anything have a chance in life whether a difformed mutant girl or a pretty jennifer aniston look alike they all MUST have a chance. And P.S.....Spiders are freaky.....

BelgianBeer Nov 18, 2005 02:51 PM

Dude you are sadly out of touch. It will never be a popular deformity. I know a lot of people in this industry that think that animal is a disgrace to breeding efforts, and they will NEVER change that opinion.

twps Nov 17, 2005 05:48 PM

Sorry guys but I think it is an awesome looking snake. Just one question though what does it feel like? from the pics it almost looks like it would feel like a leopard gecko.
Thanks, Jay
