getting new garter soon

hey yall im going to get a new garter soon. I'm not exactly sure what kind it is but my mom works with a lady and her son is going into the service and is giving to me. I kneed to know what temps and what to keep it on, i know rosies but what for substrate?
also is there any specific lighting thats required? and i have a fairly big cage for it, but then again they are giving me one. so responses would be really helpful..

I would also try to get the last owner write down some things for you, like if he has a vet he likes, what he fed it and how often, if he used heat/light and what kind. Knowing where it was caught and the Genus species if possible will help you too. Some species prefer fish, others worms or amphibeans, some larger ones will take thawed and warmed pinkie mice and allow you to cut back on the feedings. Getting it trained to eat the mice would make everything much easier, really. Good luck, and gartersnakemorphs really is a great site. If that isn't enough check your library for books, I found several excellent ones that way myself.
