Another trick you might consider is getting a piece of lightly frosted glass and lifting it at the corners so that it's about six to ten inches over your blue background. Get studio lights instead of using your flash and aim one light at the top of the glass while the other light is pointed between the glass and the background. Place your snakes on top of the glass for the picture.
Using this technique, the shadow from the snake falls under the glass top to the background below. The second light on the background will overcome the shadow so that there are no shadows beside your snakes. The picture will show only a beautiful snake against a perfect background. The light frosting of the glass will prevent the reflections seen in these pictures.
Either way, these are great pictures of beautiful snakes. When I win the lottery, I may get one.
