Is the Gecko okay.

kulkat Nov 16, 2005 10:38 PM

My daughter has had this Leopard Gecko in her room for over a year now. Under tank heater, and a heat rock inside. He came outside every night and just hung around. The past several weeks, I noticed he wasn't out anymore. So I decided to put him in the living room with the rest of my critters, I thought maybe he needed to be a little warmer. I check on him every night, he seems fine. He eats but he doesn't race to his food like he used to. Today I put a low heat bulb on his tank, temp went to low 80's. Is he okay do they "relax" for the winter?

Yes, many will brumate, or slow down significantly for the winter. I'm a little surprised that you have a UTH, heat rock, and a bulb, and temp is still in the low 80s? Doesn't sound right to me. Most of mine are fine w/ just a UTH

I only put the heat light on now just for these past two days to see if there was a change in his behaviour. Yes, he lasted these past years with just the UTH and rock. I will probably take away the light now that I know he is just slowing down.

he should be fine. just keep the water coming, dont drop below low 60s temp (gradually if you chose) and make sure he's not losing any significant weight. You can continue to offer food, but dont be surprised if goes a couple weeks of refusing food. As long as hes maintaining weight, chill and enjoy the reduced feeding schedule
