Help with prolapse!!!!

methistina Nov 16, 2005 11:46 PM

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do about a prolapse (besides go to the vet, i cant get in for a couple of days)? My male albino has what i am guessing is a colonary prolapse a little smaller than a dime. It could also be a hemipenal prolapse as he was locked up with a female recently and deficated. Any and help would be greatly appreciated!!!

1st I'd find a vet that'll get you in anytime. My vet has worked on my snake up till midnight, and can take anything serious in anytime with a simple phone call.
Although I haven't dealt with prolapses, I've read of people keeping the area damp with wet/warm paper towels until the vet appt. I'd do a search on the forums about this, and maybe also on the Python forum since the treatment would most likely be the same. ------But come back to the Boa forum ..LOL

it was not a pretty sight. I soaked her in warm sugar water (sugar has healing properties) and kept her on warm, wet paper towels until I could get her to the vet.
The surgury went fine, but she re-prolapsed and died a few days later. Most survive a prolapse, especially hemipene prolapse, I just wasn't so lucky.
I hope you can get him to the vet soon.
Good luck with him.

I have done this with many rescued animals, Heat the water until almost boiling so the max amount of sugar will disolve into it, let the water cool down until it just feels warm when you stick your hand in it, don't want to scald the prolased tissue and soak the snake, swelling will come down and many times the prolapse will go back in by it self, if not you can "help" it in gently. Even if this works, it is still a good idea to get her to the vet ASAP

Hi Greg,
I have had two Boas in my life with prolapse, one was a rectal Prolapse where a small section of bowl came out and the other was the hemi penis and here is what happened.
The rectal prolapse was put back into the snake with a couple of stiches on each side of the vent to help keep things in (this was done by a vet of course) the snake was given anti biotics and once the stiches were removed 2 weeks later that snake never had a problem again.
The hemi Penis Prolapse was from a female that meant no when she said it. In the battel to breed she squeezed her much smaller suiter so hard that it prolapsed both sides of his hemi penis. One half had to be amputated but the other half was saved. The snake was never used for breeding again and I sold him to a taecher that wanted to use him is a class room display.

either wy it is going to be a Vet intervention thing. I would use some potroleum Jelly to coat the prolapsed part to keep it moist until the vet can get to it.
Good Luck
