new cage on the market, what do you guys think?

HerpGirl Nov 17, 2005 07:29 AM

these cages have been on the market, that i have seen them for a few months now and there is something i havent quite figured out yet.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/R08/Class/Reptile Supplies Cages/T1/R12EX 0171 1361/EDP/47766/Itemdy00.aspx

they are inexpensive, large and seem like they would be great for some chams. but the thing is, how are you expected to provide heat and uvb? the cage is meant to hang and has no built-in fixtures i was looking at the ones in the store (that pet place) and it says they are great for housing herps and you can attach them like a bookbag to take through the field for temporary housing to observe wild herps, they also collapse like a frisbee. id imagine that a heat lamp would melt the mesh and im not even going to think how you could get a fluorescent on there, unless you ran it down the side or something. so, what do you guys think?

This link supplies a little more info:

www.exo-terra.com/EN/products/explorarium_i.html

Says you can put a special incandescent bulb, that they sell, inside of it. Also says you can hang it near a window safely.

I don't know. I've never kept chams. If kept indoors in cool weather you'd have to hang some lights near it.

in that article,

"An incandescent light fixture (e.g. Exo Terra’s Glow Light) can be easily mounted inside the enclosure."

~a heat lamp inside the enclosure would allow the herps to burn themselves on it and outside would melt the nylon.

"The nylon mesh allows ultraviolet rays from fluorescent UVB lights to penetrate deep inside the enclosure. The Explorarium can also be positioned in front of windows, without the risk of overheating, as is common with glass terrariums."

~they dont mention that windows filter all the uvb out of the sun and it would only actually give off light. for it to work you would have to have the window open and then it would allow cold/hot air in on the enclosure and the light would still be filtered by the window and cage screens.

still , i think it is a neat design but aside from fielding i am not convinced of its usefulness. has anyone used one, i would be curious of your results.
thanks everyone!
