My veiled is finally ready to lay...

drew01833 Nov 17, 2005 11:28 AM

After mating on October 15th my veiled started to dig her nest last night. Today she set about finishing it, a photo of her digging is on The Herp Couch

This is my fist clutch but over four weeks before laying is longer than what I was expecting. Any thoughts on how this may affect clutch size/viability?

Four weeks is about average I would say. If she hasn't gotten serious about digging her tunnel yet, she may take a while longer. I've had several that go in and throw some dirt around, then leave and don't come back for another two weeks, only to do the same thing again. When you see her sitting near the digging substrate looking like a bag of marbles, she is getting close. I think they look absolutely miserable at this point but she may leave the digging chamber and not come back for another two weeks yet. There won't be any effect on the eggs I don't believe. Good luck.

Well, after a long day she laid 49 eggs. It was a LONG process! She dug the tunnel over a period of two days. The second day she spent over 12 hours digging, laying and burying. It carefully dug up the eggs and placed them in the incubator. (See photos here )

Now I just have to hurry up and wait...
