Prey size question

kthulhu Nov 17, 2005 11:49 AM

I have a sstp that was born in the begining of july. He is about 16 in long and about 2 in wide. When i got him i was feeding him 2 small mice a week, but he seems to not be interested in them, i'm guessing they are way to small. The nearest pet store to me, petco, only sells small rats, not pups. Do you think a small rat would be too large?

Hard to say given relative terms like "small rat' and "too big". If youve no choice but your local PETCO, you going to have to imagine what sort of "lump" the smallest available rat would make in your snake and go for it or wait until your SSTP has more size. I would guess that 40-50 grams would be ok now but that probably won't be of much help. Again if PETCO is your only choice, you might ask when they will receive their next shipment which give you the best selection of younger/smaller feeders. This won't be a long-lived problem in any event.

Hey,
I think that it would be just fine feeding it a small rat. A small rat is about the size of a large or adult mouse. So for a snake the size you described a small rat would be fine. JM2C!

Thanx for the replies. I think my problem was that i was buying the prepackaged t-rex mouse six packs. They were labeled adult mice but are more like the size of fuzzies. I went back to petco and bought a single adult mouse and it was probably twice the size of the ones i was trying to feed ths snake originally. He ate the larger one with no problem, so i guess the he figured the mice i was trying to feed him were too small to bother with. At least now i now better than to buy the six packs. Again, thanx for the replies.
