Wanting to get into turtles....

phiber_optikx Nov 17, 2005 02:40 PM

I am wanting to get into turtles and was wondering what everyone suggests as a first. Color is nice in a turtle but ease of care and size is the biggest factor. Can somebody list of a few smaller species and basic care requirements? Also largest size tank that would be needed for that species. Thanks!

RES need a 75 for a full grown female. painted turtles stay a little smaller, but a wide (18" tank is still better than a narrow (12" tank like a 55. basic care for all are filter, lighting, basking area, and a varied diet. what size tank were thinking would be the biggest you can handle?

75 gallon tank? You've never seen a 12-13 inch female...

yes i have, and a 75 is 18" wide so there would be rotating space. i didnt say it would be ideal, it is minimal.

I would suggest Mud or Musk as a beginners turtle. They are extremely hardy and fairly forgiving of beginners mistakes. Go here for some good caresheets. www.austinsturtlepage.com .
Just remember that keeping turtles isn't cheap as a proper initial setup can be quite expensive.

Some sort of male map turtle.

Black knobs are really cool.

Cagle's Maps are nice too.

They're both fairly easy to take care. Check out Austin's Turtle Page for information on them. A male can go in a 55 gallon tank no problem (they get 3-4 1/2". Females of both species tend to get 6"-10" and would need at least 125 gallons.
