How long(large) is the largest species of chameleon....more.....

longissima Jul 22, 2003 07:09 PM

A person I work with has told me that he saw a Meller's chameleon that was 4 feet long. I have been in the reptile hobby for 20 years and have never heard this before. I told him that he must be mistaken and that Meller's normally are between 24 and 28 inches in length. I know Oustalet's and Parson's get just as big or bigger, but nowhere near 4 feet long. I would like your input on this as to what you guys believe to be the longest/largest species and just how big of a chameleon you have witnessed. Thanks for your time. Derek

You are absolutely right in what you have known about the Meller's, Oustalet's and Parson's chameleons. There is no known chameleon species that will reach 4 feet in length so the person who told you this was exaggerating a little more than expected.

On Average the oustalet's chameleon is the longest, but some parsons chameleons have broken there record. Oustalets are stim, but parsons chameleonsd are very bulky so i think the award should go to the parsons. then there are mellers and verrucosus coming in 3rd and 4th. i think the record is somthing like 33"?
