Ralph Davis "My Hero"

Philthy Nov 17, 2005 03:09 PM

I am sure that by the time people respond to this that is where this will be! First, my name is Phil Buscher. I am sure a lot of you have seen me or met me at the shows and if you have not, stop by and introduce yourself next time! I was told to come and read the “new forum”. Well after reading all of this I am really bothered even more! Not many people on here will talk about there personal life with people but I’m game!

I will tell you about a side of Ralph Davis that most of you all do not know nor will take the time to learn. If you spent half of the time that you do bashing him and got to know him you might be suprized! I had seen Ralphs adds in Reptiles and I had never met him before and he was in Maryland also. While at a expo in Orlando I was working with Brian Sharp at his table. Pete Kahl had a table right beside Brians and Ralph was sitting there one day of the show. We started talking and just B.S. ed for the weekend. A few weeks later I was in Snakekeepers chat and I ran into Ralph again. We talked for awhile and he gave me his phone number and told me to give him a call sometime. A few more weeks went by and I called him to see if I could come to his place and see what he had. Well, most breeders with high end animals don’t let people they “don’t know” in to see there stuff! He told me to come up anytime and I did! He showed me all around and we hung out and talked for hours! That week I was talking to someone and they told me to watch Ralph, they said he was arrogant and would stab me in the back! Well the way I was brought up was not to judge a person on what you hear but what you know and I am glad I did! I started going out to his house on a regular basis and he was always working with the animals. I would help him while I was there because I enjoy working with the animals and it was fun to see all the different ones. Granted this was in the late 90's and a lot of the stuff we see today was not there then! I called him up one day to see what he was up to and he was planting trees in his yard and said it was killing him! Well I went out there after work and helped him finish them all up! When we were done he told me he had something for me? Well when I left there I had an albino male ball! I did not want to take it but he was not going to take no for an answer! Well that meant more to me than he will ever know! He has done numerous other things for me and my family since! One day I was asking him some carpentry questions since that is his other business on my basement that I wanted to finish. Well when everything was said and done he and his crew showed up with all the materials and finished all the framing in a few hours! When I asked him what I owed him he said nothing and thanks for the help! Well in my book this is what being friends is all about in helping each other! This summer I needed to put a roof on my garage and he called me while I had just started on it to talk. I told him what I was doing and in an hour he was in my driveway with his tool belt and we worked on it till midnight and the next day! He told me roofing sucks but it was definitely a lot nicer with his help on it and he would not accept anything from me for his help! My daughter started going to a trade school in Baltimore last year for one year. Next thing I know she is living with Ralph and his family because it cut her commute in half! When we go to shows he covers all of our expenses, even flies my wife down there all for just helping him at his table for the weekend! When we go to shows the first thing he says is he is covering all of the expenses and there was going to be no argument about it! I don’t like people paying my way but he would have it no other way! Well if he was only in it for the money I don’t think he would be so generous with it!!!

Arrogant??? Anyone in business knows that sometimes you need to be! If you are not then people will walk on you! He is very passionate about the ball market! I know it bothers him and a lot of us to see the stuff going on here right now! That is why you do not see me post on here or sell any animals from here! I am not going to try and compete with the slash and burn mentality! I bought my first ball in 1990 and fell in love with them then! I have been breeding them since 1996 and have produced a few hundred babies. Yes, I still have most of them because I am not in it for the quick buck like a lot are they are worth more to me as future breeders than the cash that I would sell them for! When people start to realize this and the work that goes into them they will stop giving them away! I have seen a lot of people come and go in this business! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, not to mention money to get going! That is why the big breeders deserve the respect that they should get! They should not constantly be getting bashed for the prices that they ask! Some of them have over $50k in expenses a month!!!! YES A MONTH!!! How would you like that over your head all the time? I have seen Ralph write checks to the IRS that would make your head spin! When they sell an animal for $5k, after taxes and expenses are taken out they might see $2k as profit! Now when you sell the same animal for $3500 and put all the money in your pocket you have already made $1500 on the same animal! Now do you see why they do not try to compete in the price slashing??????

The big breeders try to maintain a market for there customers because if they didn’t they would not have a market or customers! I have personally seen Ralph turn down a $50k deal from someone who was trying to see if he would underbid one of his customers! Would you do that for one of your customers?? This business should not be about having the lowest priced animals for sale and having to sell them in the same day you post them! When people realize this it will be better for everyone! Work as hard to build a reputation for you and your animals and the sales will come without slashing the prices! You will get a lot further in the business this way!

I am sure all of us on here have learned something from Ralph through e mails, phone calls or his journal! A lot of breeders will not be so open about everything and this is what I have respected about Ralph. Good or bad he tells it all! He receive more e mails in a day than most of us will receive in a year and he answers every one of them! I have seen him answer questions on an animal that someone bought from another breeder and could not get in touch with them!

Why buy from a big breeder? Well lets say you buy a high end animal from someone who produces two. If something happens to that animal are you going to have as much chance of them replacing it as a big breeder that has an inventory??? Probably not! They have taken a lot of time and money to build the reputation they have and they are not going to throw it away on something stupid! It is no different than anything we buy every day, we want someone to stand behind it if something happens! I have known people to get into this business and sell normals as poss hets and when questioned they said anything is possible! Is this the kind of person you want to deal with to save a few dollars? Buying from a big breeder is like having some insurance on the animal. Yes, it is going to cost a little more but it is all in what you feel comftorble with. Don’t bash them for this, respect them for this!

In closing I would like to thank Ralph for everything he has done for myself and my family! It means more than you know! Maybe someday I will be able to repay you for his generosity! And for trying to protect and stand up for the market so some day it will be there when I sell some animals!

P.S. Great post Christy! You know the same thing I do about Ralph and I have your back and I know you will have mine!

obviously phil you know my story with ralph.......but for those who don't it's pretty similar to phils.

i started emailing ralph back before he started his own forum (6 years ago)......within a month or so he invited me and my wife to come up and visit.....no need for a hotel, food was taken care of etc....since then we have been up numerous times, spent countless hours on the phone and via email.....and this was all before i had ever bought anything from him.....

on that first visit he unloaded more info on me than i could even remember.....little tips and tricks to breeding, ways to incubate better, all kinds of stuff......and every trip since there has always been something new learned from him.

it has really been amazing watching his operation grow from a handful of albinos and het pieds into what it is today.....mainly i'm just amazed at all the stuff he can get done in a day!

while i may disagree with things that ralph says or does from time to time i will always feel a debt to him for the help he has given and the hospitality he has shown to me and my wife. he has gone out of his way for us on several occasions and it is greatly appreciated.

Not even remotely close to the most extensive collection of ball python morphs in captivity!

Herpquest Nov 17, 2005 04:11 PM

Well said Phil, I agree with every word!! Ralph is a rough diamond with a heart of gold and doesn't deserve all the crap that has been thrown in his direction. 95% of the people that 'know' Ralph have nothing but good things to say about him; the other 5% aren't worth mentioning! Ralph wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he has had to work damned hard to get where he is today - both with his construction business and with his BP's.
So he charges high prices for the morphs that he develops does he? Try working out how much it costs to import a wild caught, possibly new morph from Africa? Anywhere between $50k and $150k plus shipping, paperwork and vet bills!
The new snake may be infested with ticks, internal parasites and God kmows what else. It then has to be cared for carefully and 'persuaded' to eat prey that it may never have eaten before.
Very few breeders have been able to breed with imported snakes in the first year of captivity, it is usually two or three years before an import produces and even then you are not guarenteed to produce anything worth 'crowing' about!
Is the new morph carrying a Dominent or a Recessive trait? You won't know until you have bred it. If it is Dominent you have a chance of getting the new morph 'on the market' within the next two years at the earliest; if it is Recessive, it could be as early as 5 years - if you're lucky!
How many of the 'so-called' BP breeders would pay out$100K plus, just on the off-chance that the gamble will pay off 5 years (and a lot of work) later. VERY,VERY few!!
People like Ralph,Pete,Kevin and even my old mate Bob Clark are the pioneers of the Ball python industry and deserve our respect, however grudgingly, for taking risks that very few others would even consider - let alone take.

Ralph's a pussycat. He's got two thriving businesses, a couple of good kids, a gorgeous wife ( I peek when I'm getting my hair cut there...lol), and life is good to him...but he made it to where he is by himself.

Now if I can get some free rats out of this testimonial Friday, I'll be happy Proud to call him my friend, although it hasn't been very long. I'm old enough to be his father....and he's a good boy....

Philthy hit the nail on the head.....there is another side to Ralph that most people don't get the chance to see.

I have learned a lot from Ralph.....from snake stuff to business stuff......I even picked up the annoying habit of spacing thoughts and sentences with too many periods.......

If the people that bash him had the opportunity to watch him work for just one day, they would be singing another tune. I am not saying they would like him.....I am just saying they would have a new found respect for him. His operation is TIGHT and he knows how to run things.

And also the man can wistle like a song bird which is pretty cool.

Not that Ralph or anyone else needed my two cents but I felt motivated.

Thanks for everything Ralph,
Joe

I respect Ralph Davis, Kevin, Dave and Tracy, Ron Tremper, Bob Clark... the list goes on. I respect anyone that works hard and produces beautiful herps. I might not always like the personality of a fellow professional herper, but that's not important. I myself am a full time reptile breeder, and I know firsthand the time, effort, love and money (one must spend money to make money) that we put into it. It is not an easy "job", however I have never had a job that is so fulfilling.

I think a lot of the negativity comes from jealousy, pure and simple. I deal with it a lot in the leopard gecko world, and it is best to let it roll off your back, even though it can be hurtful sometimes.

We all have different personalities, that is the way we humans are! Naturally some personalities rub us the wrong way, whether they are too arrogant, too seemingly self serving, whatever it may be. But one has to have a love for herps, pure and simple, in order to be successful in this business LONGTERM. Of course there are those that get into it strictly for the money, and you will find that those people don't last too long.

I will admit some of Ralph's posts annoy me (mostly his constant use of the word "boner" and the phrase "rock on", sorry Ralph LOL just being honest). But I must say that his journal posts on his website are always straightforward and very honest, which is more than I can say for alot of the posts I read on the forums. He pretty much tells it like it is, from his viewpoint, and does not care what others think. That, to me, is something that I respect highly, and I would rather have Ralph call me a boner than have him tell me how great I am just so I will spend money with him. I dig that.

Actually, the definition of "boner" is a blunder or joke. To "pull a boner" was to play a joke on someone or themselves. Ralph takes it one step further to refer to "jokers" as "boners".

If he needs more trees planted Im first in line, or any other yardwork for that matter. Now I am off to his website to see what else I can learn, When you have people devote a string of posts to you and they all say you are a stand up guy thats an easy thing to remember when you are shopping for some new snakes.

Thanks, Jay

P.S. I wasnt kidding about the trees lol

For all the bad things said about Ralph...I've yet to really see any proof. From what I can see, it all comes from jealousy. People can't sell their animals because nobody knows them and they have to undercut other big time. I'm 2 years away from producing my first morph, and 3 years away from having a snake inventory worth speaking of...but even NOW I'm working shows, meeting people, making friends, ect...why? so that in 2-4 yrs when I need it i'll already have a reputation. It's just simple common sense. I personally haven't had the $ to purchase an animal from Ralph just yet...But he his on my list of people to buy from.

Ralph is a great guy, he's worked hard to get where he's gotten. A matter of fact I am sure he has been responcible for helping ALOT of small breeders getting where they are today. All "The Big Boys" are the reason we have a ball game to play in to begin with. You could have a lot of money but without the knowledge & experience, from "the Big Boys" it would not be possible to jump into a breeding project and be succesful. I started breeding Ball Pythons in 02 when I aquired some Ball's from Ralph. I was a nobody(and still am) one of the very little breeders, but he treated me with respect and didn't treat me like a little pee on. He was a great guy to work with and helped me with every question I had, he always returned my emails or calls fast.
Whether you are in the game for fun or to make money you need to love Ball Pythons, and be smart about your Business decisions. Just because your not in it to make money doesn't mean you shouldn't take it seriously. Of course the market prices are going to drop but you don't have to intentionally crash the price. Slow down and take pride in your bussiness or hobby, and enjoy it. It's not a rat race.
Thanks to Raphie and all the Big Boys for your investment in creating and developing the ball market, and making it possible for a little guy like me to have the potential of making some money doing something I love.
Long Live the Ball Python Market.

Phil,

Great post! I was friends with Ralph long before I started buying anything from him. Most of the big breeders won't return your phone calls or emails. Ralph is one of the very few people who will actually call you back!....and every email gets a response. I know if I ever have a problem or question Ralph is always there to answer the phone no matter what he's doing. Sometimes I think he answers the phone too much.......I don't need to talk to him if he's playing volleyball or working on the addition...lol. I have a lot of respect for Ralph and he is a great person! I'd be friends with him even if he didn't have any animals. I know I'm welcome at his place anytime and he's also welcome at my place anytime!!

Regards,
Corey
PS. The whole Ralph crowd is made up of great people. I aways enjoy hanging out with them when I'd down at Ralphs or in Daytona. Ralph & Teresa, Phil & Robin, Rob (Fatty) & Sandy, Joe Compel and all the other "crew" are just awesome!

ttjmi34 Nov 22, 2005 06:27 PM

I am not one of the Crew, The Gang, and I have never personally met Ralph but he has helped me tremendously throughout the years. My daughters (4,10, and 13)and I have a small breeding group that we enjoy working with. Our first year of production was 04' and we again produced in 05'. I originally began emailing and speaking with Ralph in 2000-2001 and was always treated with respect and honesty. Ralph holds no punches and yet he has always been very patient and understanding to me as a newbie. He has answered all of my emails from that day on. My first purchases where from RDR and most of our addition ones have come from Ralph as well. I would like to say thanks for your time and energy but more importantly the knowledge you have shared with us so that we too could enjoy our hobby and one day have it pay for itself. This hobby would not be where it is in our lives without Ralph and his help.

Thanks Ralph
