Are these greens suitable for iguanas?

jrbl Nov 17, 2005 03:16 PM

Hi,

I was wondering whether amaranth greens were okay to feed iguanas. They are supposed to be very nutritious and taste like spinach. I have only seen amaranth on one iguana website, the iguana den. They indicated it had a Ca:P ratio of 4.3:1. However, I found a website that indicated that amaranth greens have 1.09 grams of oxalic acid per 100 grams. Is that too much oxalic acid? I have been feeding "mustard spinach" occasionally for some time now. Is this a suitable green? The iguana den website indicates that it has a Ca:P ratio of 7.5:1, but I cannot find any other information on it. I was also curious about purslane. I know it has load of calcium, but it has 1.31 grams of oxalic acid per 100 grams. I also read that purslane has the highest concentration of omega3-fatty acids of any land plant. I know people need this, but do iguanas? Thank you all for your help, and I apologize if I was rambling.

Above-Center where you click for "Post New Message" there's the "Search Forums"

Click it. Type amaranth and keep it under "current", as in the current forum you're in.

You'll have 4 or 5 results. Look at the first one.
Basically yes, it is ok.
