reasons for shyness?

sutorherp1 Nov 17, 2005 06:37 PM

Hey; I've got five out-of-the-water froglets I am keepin in a tank with simply sphagnum moss, a very shallow waterbowl, plant pot hiders, and magnolia leaves. I have to make a lexan lid to hold better humidity, which I shall do within the next 24 hours. I'm not sure if they are just shy right out of the water? Mabey. What are some reasons for shyness in dendrobates? The froglets are feeding, just hide under the leaves often; they are on a varied diet powdered with dendrocare. Right now I'm assuming it is humidity...but I'm not sure...I've even got 2 of the tank walls covered in paper and half of the front. Any reasons for shyness in yongue dendrobates known, please share. Thanks,
-Sean

PS: is there a problem with keeping a UV hood light ontop of a lexan lid? It will obviously have holes. Thanks.

Young D. auratus will tend to be shy. Just let them be shy and give them plenty of hiding space if they seem to require it. They'll get over it. The better cover my very shy blue auratus have, the more they show themselves and feel safe, although I understand the blues are far more shy than the others. I doubt that it has anything to do with the humidity you are already providing, and the UV proposal sounds supurfluous to me. Even with small holes in the top, you aren't going to get any practical UV into the tank, because it will be filtered out, and as long as you are dusting with the calcium, D3, etc., you don't truly need it. Ed K has more specifics on this than I do.

Sounds fine to me; the adults were shy in the begginning in just sphagnum moss and a bromeliad...I didn't have much hiding space and in their new viv they are much more active. Thanks alot,
-Sean
