whats best

riddick13 Nov 17, 2005 11:50 PM

i just got a baby male red tail. I need advise on the size cage and heating element i should get. I think 48"x24"x12" could be good for a male because they generally dont get too big( its been years since i had a red tail). I also don't know if flex watt of a heat panel would work best. I got six corns in a rack with flexwatt and it works fine, but the red tail is more tropical and may require something different. any advise would be greatly apprieciated. It's great you can come to a place where people are so willing to help.
thanks for your time.

As an adult, a 4'x2' floor area is fine unless this male gets really big (most males stay under 7ft, so you will likely be fine.) A cage that size can be heated with Flexwatt or a radient heat panel - see www.pro-products.com or www.boaphile.com or www.beanfarm.com

But what about for now? Plastic storage box is the easiest enclosure for now. Use a soldering iron to poke air holes around the sides. You can use Flexwatt to heat 1/3 of the cage to 90 deg - use a temperature controller. Put in something that the snake can climb up on to escape the heated floor if desired.

If the room gets cool you might need another piece of Flexwatt under the cool end of the box. Set this for about 80 deg.
