can they live together?

lauralyon Nov 18, 2005 02:11 AM

ok, i have 1 male florida cooter, and 1 female yellow bellied terrapin.
they were toghether before i got them, and they are together now. ive had them 12 months.
the female yellow bellied is now getting quite a bit bigger than the male cooter. im just womdering whether these 2 will stay living together or whether im going to have to consider splitting them up sometime soon? i have not seen any agression, and both are eatin like pigs. they must have doubled size in the 12 months i have had them. i have them in a 36*12*12 at the minute and they seem happy.

what do you think? should i just keep my eye on them or consider splitting them before somehting happens? or should they live happily toghether irregardless of size?

how big are they? females usually get a lot larger. the fact that they are male and female is probably going to help you. you shouldnt have any problems with them fighting or anything. but i think you should get a bigger tank. they need the space and 12" wide isnt much for any decent sized turtle. it could start to inhibit their growth. they are also more likely to fight in a small tank.

Agreed. They should be fine. If they are small now the tank they are in will be adequate but both these species do get very large so much larger accomodations should be considered down the line.

the female is probably around 6 inches along the shell, the male around 4.5 inches. the tank dimensions i gave were wrong, it is a 36 * 12 * 15 deep. and they ahve 9 inches of water in it at the minute.

15 deep, is that height or width? either way i still think they should be moving up into a bigger tank asap, like yesterday.

when i say deep i mean height.
