How long?

amelcorn Nov 18, 2005 12:17 PM

How long do you leave your males in with the female? As long as there is copulation? These 2 have been going at it off and on for over a month. I take him out after about 3 days and then return him about a week and a half later. Are the other copulations really needed, or are they just having a good time?LOL

I'd keep putting them together once every couple of weeks or so through March. That's probably overkill, however, unless you have ten other females to breed him to, it won't hurt. In general, I'd say it is too early to stop breeding.

Good luck and congrats!

Awww - but then does it really matter - I mean these animals are presumed to be able to retain viable sperm for at least one if not more seasons. If they breed heavily in the beginning of the season shouldn't that be enough?

LOL -just playing devils advocate - I defer to those that know...

This year, I had a female lay nine eggs: 2 were slugs, the others looked nice and white and plump. None showed veining. Only one lived. I'm convinced the eggs were not fertilized. Breed, breed, breed! And when you think you are done, breed again!
