Wondering why my bts died at 5 days of age

rmcn126 Nov 18, 2005 12:19 PM

I think I know why but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. I gave him a large shallow water dish to sit in, I used T.Rex reptile bark for bedding (That's what I made him sick), I used a heat lamp and a uvb lamp and I gave him places to hide.

Did he eat the placenta, what were you feeding him?

I fed him a grape and some crickets. But he was already sick when I put the crickets in and they were eating him which I did not notice until I picked him up.

Your crix must have been very hungry! I don't know if you already did this or how long you left the crix in the cage but you had to gutload them before giving them to your bts. Normaly, crix aren't hungry if you fed them before. It also depends on how many you put in the tank. Next time, try putting about 10 crix in the cage and after 15 to 30 minutes, remove them.

Where did the animal come from? How do you know he was 5 days old? If he died within 5 days, you should receive a full refund as the animal was likely sick already when you got him.

Pet store purchase? Private breeder? Pictures? Give us more background and information.

Well I baught him from a breeder and he did give me my money back. But I don't have any pics. He was an irian jayan and when we were looking at him to see if he was ok he seemed to cling to me but when we came home with him he slowly became less and less active and eventually stopped moving completly. But we figured that it was just because he was ajusting to his new environment.

Probably a birth defect.

Sorry to hear that you lost your baby BTS. In my opinion I really don't think anyone will be able to accurately diagnose the cause of death without doing a post mortem exam, but I really do not think that a few crickets killed your skink.

I am also definitely not saying that your choice of bedding or food caused the death of this animal, but when I was breeding BT Skinks or any other herp for that matter. I try to choose substrate that cannot be eaten. Good choices would be newspaper, indoor outdoor carpeting, or paper towels. These substrates may not look as nice but I have never heard of an animal accidentally ingesting it.
