Pillbugs?

gomezvi Nov 18, 2005 01:41 PM

I was just emailed Vegasbilly and the subject of pillbugs as feeders came up.
Anyone have any information? I'm fairly confident that they are a safe feeder. Has anyone tried raising some, offering a good gutload?
Can I get them as feeders from any source out there? I just haven't seen a SINGLE pill bug out here in Phoenix!

I got a starter colony from Carolina Biological. They have both pillbugs and sowbugs (can't roll up). I keep them in a critter cage with a topsoil substrate and bark pieces. Offer them decomposing deciduous leaves like alder, willow, maple, and flake fish food. Keep the substrate moist but not wet and avoid heat. Large chams may not be attracted by them. My jax loved them.

Victor,

They guy I buy my rodents from in Vista, Ca. is starting to raise them. He also has quite a few different species of roaches as well - some he showed me yesterday are about an inch long and are metallic green as adults! They looked like a bunch of manicured fingernails running on the egg crates! His outfit is called "Double Ds". His name is Dexter, great guy! He has some adds posted in the feeder classifieds. His next foray will be into stick insects.

Must be Cubans, aka banana roaches. I think they're considered pests in South Florida.
I tried to locate hi contact info, but didn't see anything in the feeder section. You'll have to give it to me when you can. Might be interested in his 'other' ventures.
