Turtles & Tortoises Stolen - sorry long post

saffire Nov 18, 2005 02:43 PM

Please pass this on to everyone you know – whether they are a animal lovers or not. My hopes are that the more people who are informed regarding the incident I am going to share with you then the higher the chance that someone will hear about something, get a tip or something else and pass the information on. You know how fast those cute emails circle the globe – well this is my hope.

A dear friend of mine, Turtle Lady, was robbed of thousands of dollars of turtles and tortoises from her home recently. The gravity of the situation is not in just the theft itself, but many of these were pets who she has had for many years. The long life of turtles and tortoises means that many of these animals have been with her since she was young and have certainly grown up with her family. Indeed some of these have followed her children around the home and yard as they took their first steps and grew into adults that they are today in high school, college and married. Simply by the name that she has chosen to represent her you can get the jest of her love for her turtles. The Turtle Lady has touched the lives literally of thousands. She for many years has taken her entourage of turtles/tortoises and other reptiles into schools, libraries, community centers, festivals, etc. to share her love with children. Her motto says it all – Changing little pieces of the world... One Turtle...one Child...at a time. The Turtle Lady has been featured with a full page spread and several other miscellaneous articles in various papers including the Columbus Dispatch for her special programs. She has also had a feature story previously in the Reptile Magazine. I hope now I am truly expressing the gravity of this loss. Well let me add some more – some of the turtles and tortoises stolen were also rescues from individuals who loved them, but could no longer care for them. Again with the life span of these animals many individuals have these for pets for decades and then life chances and they love them no less, but may need help caring for them even temporally. The Turtle Lady has never turned a turtle away. So some of the stolen were not just her beloved animals, but that of others as well. Finally, two were on medicine and none can handle the northern US winters – all were going into hibernation, therefore, they are seriously at risk.

Due to the nature of the animals take in comparison to the ones left behind – it is very obvious that the individual(s) knew what they were doing. All of the animals taken were high dollar species. There has been a theft ring and black market for exotics for some time. The animals are stolen and many times transported to another state and sold at lower rates allowing the buyer to think they are getting a great deal. Due to the dollar amount involved, crossing state lines, etc. this is a felony with federal implications. The good news is that unlike many stolen lizards, tortoises are more commonly tagged. Many of these animals were tagged and if scanned the individual with the stolen property will be caught and prosecuted (at a minimum for receiving stolen property).

Please, if you hear of someone who has a large number of turtles or tortoises and is offering them at a “good deal” – please, please contact me with this information. We will be happy to run down all misleads because we know there is always a chance – this is called hope. I understand this hope, as I too have experienced this type of loss due to theft of on of my pets. I was lucky because someone did just what I am asking and I was able to retrieve my pet.

Also please pass this on like all those cute emails, chain mails, etc. you never know who will receive it and have just the right information to return the Turtle Lady to babies that she has had for decades.

For those of you who are knowledgeable about reptiles here is a list of the types stolen (numbers stolen varied for each species but a total of roughly 35 animals valued in the thousands): Cherryheaded Redfoots, Golden Greeks, large Redfoots, large Yellowfoots, very large Russian and medium Russians, Blandings, Eastern Box, Spotted, and Woods.

i truly do wish that the penalties for stealing pets were the same as those for kidnapping. maybe then some of these -- (i can't use the appropriate four-letter words here, but i'm sure you can guess a few) -- stinking sacks of mobile flesh that try and pass themselves off as "human beings" would think twice before doing such a thing. i'm sure that there are a lot of people who would disagree with that, but i come from an upbringing where ALL pets are FAMILY, and were treated and loved as such. i cannot being to fathom the heartbreak that turtle lady and those she was helping are going through.

i'll certainly pass it along.

i think more and more that perhaps i should tag my own little tort one day. my boyfriend and i have talked about getting him an outdoor pen when he's bigger, but we're both afraid that someone might steal him (i'd definitely not trust my current neighbors). as far as monetary value goes, he's not worth as much, but as far as we are concerned, he's our kid.

best of luck to all involved in the search.

perhaps that might be helpful... you never know who might try and sell a few at local reptile shows, classified ads, flea markets, swap meets...

Sorry forgot to include that in the post - just north of Columbus, Ohio - southern Delaware county. Thanks for asking - we do feel they will be transported out of state since that has been the pattern with this type of thefts. THANKS, saffire

We had our sulcata micro-chipped this past March. I know it won't stop someone from stealing her but she has permanent ID now. That could really be worth it just in case she ever is stolen. If a person were caught with her & she was scanned, they'd be in deep doo doo.
The vet didn't charge much for this, I forget exactly how much but I think it was 25-30 dollars, then we had to pay about 12 dollars to register her with the microchip maker. All money well spent IMO.
What a shame though that this Turtle Lady's shelled pets were tagged & still this happened. I hope whoever did it does get caught!

that's a good bit cheaper than i was thinking that it might be. and, like you said, it's money well spent -- it won't stop a theif, but it's *something* at least to prove it's your tort. thanks for sharing -- i think i'll ask my vet about my options next time i take him in for a checkup...

While you're checking on prices check with your local animal control too. Our local agency charges only $15.00 to chip an animal. We were going to do that but then our vet got her own microchipper so we had her do it instead.

It's a long story but in a nutshell the reason why we didn't do the animal control chip was because there's been a lot of problems on our street with a neighbor who lives on SSI. She sits home all day & calls the city to complain about all her neighbors for code violations, pet violations, you name it.
She's caused a lot of problems for all of us but especially for a family down the street from us who owns horses. We live in the city limits, but we're zoned differently because we are on the outskirts of town. It's legal to keep horses but you have to do it the right way.
Animal control is out here investigating the horses all the time because of that nut case constantly complaining about them. Animal control finally sent her a letter telling her that if she doesn't stop with her complaints they'll file charges on her for making false complaints.
But because of her we didn't go with the $15.00 chip simply because we didn't want to draw the attention of animal control onto us even though there is nothing in the city code that says it's illegal to have a pet tortoise.

If not for all that trouble we have I would've loved to go with the 15 dollar one because 15 bucks for a micro-chip seems like a really good price. Still the 25-30 dollars wasn't bad.

Sorry to hear this. I will keep an eye out. I can add one more thing. A lot of turtles are not just being shipped out of state but out of the country. Foreign collectors are getting smarter and offering finders fees to U.S exporters. It does not take much to send some turtles to an exporter and out of the country.
Anyone sellig (or buying) online should be extremely careful about what and where they ship. I am sure that law agencies are monitoring the web, especially large sites like Kingsnake. It is your responsibility to know the laws.

Good Luck.

This is actually our worst fear and we were unfortionately too aware of this possibility. THanks for your post - good information for many.

I keep my box ,woods and a few odds and ends out side in the summer in a 16 x 4 locked pen. My neighbors on both sides are home almost all the time and know to call the police if they see anyone in my yard. I read in an artical about turtle breeders that a FL. who has a huge out door collection. He has two BIG pit bulls that run the yard. Any theif that is dumb enough to try to take his turtles gets whats comming to them! lol

I wish I could do that but my insane complaining neighbor would start complaining to authorities about our dogs if we had big ones outside! We can't win around here :::groan::::
Our next door neighbors are a retired couple, they see everything that goes on around here, they know to call the police for us if they see anything happening. The insane neighbor tried to have the retired couple's dog taken away from them when she made charges that the dog is vicious.. a 13 year old red healer with arthritis that is inside her own fence is a really scary dog pfffffffft.

You may find it interesting to know she has a complete privacy fence surounding her property (one of the reasons everyone is so amazed they were able to pull this off - and some of those were some pretty good sized tortoises - so several people or several trips to accomplish). Also the only thing seen or
heard that night as reported by neighbors with houses in very close proximaty - is several said that they heard
a lot of "DOGS" barking in the middle of the night and this was unussual. Guess the dog idea may not be as good as it sounds - one of the dogs barking was the turtle lady's dog ........... The other reality is you just don't think you have to live this way.

Man that is a real shame! Kind of makes you think that the theft was well organized & well planned by the thieves.
With a privacy fence, dogs, what else could she have done to prevent it I wonder?
The reality of it as you say.. you just don't think you have to live this way. I so hope that whoever did this is caught & she gets her animals back.
