Will New Morphs Keep popping up

snunior Nov 18, 2005 03:39 PM

Im not talking about designer morphs im talking about new morphs that are proven out. I know every year basically something new comes out a new hypo, a new pastel a new genetic stripe...But im talking about like stuff we havent seen before like we have a all seen the derma ball python (scaless) and i know i have seen some other new ones this year.
But when will the new morphs stop coming if ever?
With all the ball pythons captured each year will they stop increasing in the wild.
And if people keep taking ball pythons out of the wild each year then i think there will be something popping up every now and then.
What are your views on this?

We have only seen the tip of the iceberg, hell yes more new morphs will be popping out.

I know more new morphs will be popping out but my question is will it ever stop

BelgianBeer Nov 18, 2005 03:53 PM

Will genetic variation ever stop? The answer to both questions is NO.

Eventually the amount of new ball python morphs will slow down, maybe even stop. Though there are alot of genetic differences, both recessive, co-dom etc, I feel eventually a end will come. There will be a point what variations are possible with ball pythons will end, as there is only so much that can be done with what genetic possibilities that exists with ball pythons. New variations can come out with hybridization, such as did with corn snakes, but in pure ballpython terms, eventually an end will come...probably not in our lifetime but eventually.

I sincerely doubt it will end. It seems like it must slow but genetic variation is infinite. There are an infinite number of characters and an infinite number of variations on a given character.

Pigeons have been domesticated for eons. New mutations and variations keep showing up. And this is without much input from a wild population.

We had a small discussion about "large size" in ball pythons. The bummer is if a true "giant gene" does emerge, it may be assumed to be a burm hybrid (largely because of other photos recently posted). I hope our segment does not follow the cornsnake geneti-nazis. Those guys are so screwed up that if someone found a true patternless blue eyed white cornsnake in the wild, few would accept it's validity. Instead it would immediately be considered a Texas rat hybrid. It won't have the pattern characters that "prove" cornsnake purity, so it simply cannot be pure corn.

I sincerely hope we can avoid this.

With the degree of variation available in pure genetics it should never come to an end.

You can look at it this way - people come in all types of genetic make-ups but we have pretty much hit our phenotype limit it is very doubtful that one day green hair or blue skin will become part of our makeup - not impossible however - so you never know. Maybe one day balls will grow arms and legs or another row of heat pit - the possibilities could be endless - or are they?!?!?!

0.0.1 Desert Tortoise (Pope John Paul aka JP )
2.2.1 Fish (1,2,3,4)
0.0.2 frogs rescued from pool skimmer

Actually mutations pop up in people all the time, fortunatly there just aren't very many captive breeding programs for humans trying to establish these traits.
