sexual maturity in males; one for the experts

boobubba Nov 18, 2005 07:23 PM

do males reach sexual maturity based on their age or their size? or does it vary from one animal to the next? i just saw an ad for a 530 gram male that is supposedly producing sperm plugs. sounds a little too small to me, but i do have a friend who successfully mated a male spider last year at somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 grams. which brings me to my question. is it more a matter of size or age?

If I'm not mistaken males are sexually mature between 12 and 18 months of age.

well my friends spider was younger than 12 months. i think it was around 8-9 months though i can't say for sure . i am positive that it wasn't 12 months though.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Some will mature earlier than others. I guess the surest bet is to wait till you find sperm plugs.

You really need to contact Alan Bosch to make sure that I am 100% correct in saying this but he had a 385 gr. male pied that breed 7 females for him last season.

I have heard of males successfully breeding as early as 6 months old!

Tommy says he had a male about 380 grmas too? breed and make babies...

I had my pastel breed and make 2 litters at age 7 months this year..........but he weighed in at more than 400 grams...more like? 600? and more.I forget ( and have no scales)....

I have a male spider currently breeding at 470 grams - don't know if it will work or not but the breeding season is early and he's still feeding.

Read Mike Wilbanks' article in the January 2005 issue of reptiles magazine. I believe he has a link to it on his website, www.constrictors.com. In the article, he states that the youngest male he has bred was 6 months old and 500 grams. I currently have a male that is 450 grams and producing plugs, although I would not personally breed one that small, sperm plugs or not.

Look for the one on male breeding size.
