Winter months and tank humidity...

twilightfade212 Nov 18, 2005 09:13 PM

The winter months are here, and with our houses being warmed by the heaters and taking some of the humidity out of the air, I was wondering if it is necessary to perhaps spray a mist of water every now and then in my king's tank. Other than keeping warm, does anyone have any other winter time tips? Thanks so much.

I try to increase humidity a little. Kings don't need as much as some of my ratsnakes, but we get down to about 25-35% in winter, and for snakes not brumating that's a little low. I use large water jugs, and do the occasional spray on aspen, but you can also put a moist hide in your cage in extreme cases. I also go w/o any extras lots of times and they do well.

Thanks a bunch. I'll be sure to monitor the humidity over the winter. Out of curiousity, could low humidity have negative effects on the kingsnake's health (like it can with Green Tree Pythons, though I'm aware of the huge difference of the speices). Thanks again.

I'm not a big expert on keeping kings, but I think they are pretty hardy from the few I've kept. They aren't like from tropical rainforest or anything. I'd just keep an eye on it to see what's happening and behavior, etc, especially if the humidity goes below 30%. I expect they'll be fine.
