Gunthar, the 4' BCI that my friend and I found escaped and dehydrated in the Tucsonan heat, just ate today. It's been a week since the visit to the vet, who said he was in good shape other than an unshed eyecap and his weird habit of drinking out of only one end of his mouth.
Well, he drinks straight now (still flicks his tongue sideways, maybe he's just strange), and he took a medium rat (I gave him two hours with a fresh-killed with no luck, so I gave him a live one that I "dazed" a little bit. I watched very closely with tongs and a hook just in case something happened.) with no problems. I have to admit I'm not used to a large snake (my only other boid is just a little girl), and I was worried when he was crawling around just afterwards with one side of his jaw hanging open, but he just yawned and popped it back in. Hopefully another couple weeks getting used to things will persuade him to try a f/k next time.
I've been keeping the humidity a little high (75-80), and bathing him in warm water every other day, and I didn't even notice till I put him back in his tub (from the feeding tank) that he finally got that eyecap off.
I know, I know, an eating snake with no retained eyecaps isn't exactly amazing news, but when I took him in a week ago, he was dehydrated, drooling, drinking and licking crooked as if he had a mouth infection, and now he's healthy, pretty... and plump
Thanks again for the advice those of you gave me over the last week. It turned out to be mostly precautionary, but I'm glad I did it right, and so is Gunthar!
Basil L.
