Project Leo

morgath Nov 19, 2005 03:42 AM

One of my two Leo's that I picked up from Petco last year was fairly scrawny and weak when I obtained her. She is currently being housed in a 20g with another Leo that I obtained at the same time and was approximately the same size and weight.

The weaker of the two has only increased in width over the time it seems and has a significantly smaller tail, (In my opinion way to thin, but not to the panic stage yet.) The temperatures in the cage are good, but the results I have been having lately are not.

Neither Leo seems particularly interested in crickets. They will always make a few-half hearted attempts at a chase and then quit. I have pretty much quit buying crickets because I am sick of having to chase the cursed things down and rebag them. One of my gex is doing well because she has taken to the fly and zoomed diet while the other eats very little. I have to play with her food to get her to eat anything. At this moment I can't afford a second habitat to seperate them, although they seem to get along perfectly. Nor can I afford a trip to the vet until december.

My questions are twofold; 1. Has anyone had sucess in the past with a diet of only mealworms and waxworms? 2. Is there any way I can get them (especially my weakest) to pursue more mobile prey instead of just staring at it, or snapping at it and missing badly. I think I may have cottled them too much as infants because I was worried that they were underweight after getting them from petco, and I would use a pen to drive crickets towards them and make the kill easier.

Oh, my substrate is paper towel, and I have checked them for possible impaction issues.
Many thanks

It seems to me it needs to be seperated. You can buy a sterilite container for like $1 at Walmart to house the second gecko in. You can use all kinds of cheap things as hides - old butter containers, pvc pipe, etc all which is cheap. For heat you can buy a small UTH for $20 or so maybe less. So total price like $23. If the small gecko is ill it might infect the other gecko or it may just be weak due to being stressed by the healthier/bigger gecko. Our oldest leo only eats meal worms and has always only eaten meal worms. He is fat and healthy. So I would seperate the two and see how that works out. If the smaller gecko stays lethargic etc a trip to the vet might be in order.

To seperate you could also purchase a tank divider and place the UTH under the middle of the divider. One could be sick, they both could be sick, or they both just don't like being housed with another gecko. Deffinately take to vet as soon as you can.

My geckos have done pretty well with just mealies and occasional wax worm as a treat. However I have found that supers are much better and you don't have to worry about them turning into beatles. I buy from Timberline and they have all sizes, even small enough to feed my week old hatchling.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try to seperate them out when I get my next check. I should be able to afford a smaller tank and still get christmas presents for everyone. It was also partly the thought of having a second night basking light in my room that was driving me nuts, but if I get a second under cage heater I can probably clip one light on both cages and put a piece of cardboard in between them so them don't have to see each other. It's worth a shot at least because I love both of my Leo's and wouldn't want to give up either.

Superworms aye? Yeah the turning into a beatle thing drives me nuts. I had a friend looking after my geckos while I was on vacation a while ago and had two boxes of mealworms in the fridge, I mentioned to take them out of the top box and not the bottom.

I come back and find six or seven beatles running around in the cage and find out he tried to feed them beatle larva, he was like "I saw them wriggling around in there and they looked alive!" Heh, I had to trap them all with tic tac boxes (For some reason the stupid beatles love to crawl into them).
