o.k. 1 month, 2 vet visits, and the largest variety of food i can buy, and my poor tang still wont eat. she has been treated for parasites, and impaction is out of the question due to being raised on paper towels and now on vinyl floor tile. well that and she has/is pooped just fine. she did have a hell of a trip across the country.cage temps have been ideal, with the occasional variation with this weird indian summer we are having in cali.ive heard stress can cause them to not eat for weeks but honestly im starting to worry. the vet is reputable and has had as much experience with leos as any other in 50 mile radius..... what should i do?

oh ya she is in a 20l all by her lonesome, vinyl floor tile. uth and a red heat bulb. 85 to 90 on the hot side and 75 to 80 on the cool side. hides on either end, warm side being moist and containing bed-a-beast. temps are normaly on the higher side but we have had some weird weather hence the 85/75.

IM having the same problem. I think im going to have to try force feeding soon. Ive never done it before with a leo tho. Is cricket puree fed through wide syringe acceptable?

How old is this Leo, just a baby, a juvie or an adult? Has she eaten anything at all and has she lost much weight? I ask because if it is an adult, has eaten at least a little bit off & on and hasn't lost a lot of weight, she may simply be brumating.

um, did you say vinyl tile? I have heard it releases toxic stuff when heated, and even if its not toxic, the fumes from new vinyl is enough to make me lose my appetite! What is the vet thinking?

I have a gecko that just started eating on her own again for the first time in almost 3 months. Started with an eye injury and then she got a respitory infection (presumably from the stress of medicating the eye and stuff). She quit eating when I started medicating the eye. When her weight dropped to half her normal weight I started feeding her 10 cc's of Carnivore Care every other day. I got her weight up to 60 grams (still a bit under for her, but not by much) and kept it up at 60 grams. Once she was all better and her weight had been stable for a bit I stopped feeding her the carnivore care and offered her bugs. She didn't eat for about 2 weeks but finally started eating. Her weight dropped during the 2 weeks, but not down to half.

I think that if they have enough weight to keep them going sometimes its best to leave them alone for a bit to destress. If your gecko is extremely underweight you may want to consider force feeding her to get her weight back up, and then back off for a bit and see if she remembers that having a full belly is a good thing.

I also soaked her every few days in warm water for 15 minutes to keep her hydrated.

Has your vet tried an appetite stimulant?

djseibert68 Nov 20, 2005 01:13 AM

she is 27 grams now, 32 when i got her from rays reptilia on oct. 18. born on 6.23.05. i tried force feeding her, dabbed a little chicken baby food on her nose. which she promptly licked off. the first time she couldnt hold it down, then we took her to the vet. second time i'm pretty sure she held it down. other than that she hasnt eaten since ive had her. she has shed twice though. not sure about the vinyl, gonna have to dig deeper on that, but i stuck it to plastic and then used a alcohol based cleaner to freshen it up.

Good news...i think. After a slight increase in heat, last night my Leo finally went out exploring and i think she gobbled up 3 crickets also. Im figureing she was just stressed out and has taken almost 2 weeks to finally eat. She was very fat, she almost looked like an African fat tailed when she came home. Now she looks more like a fat leo. Maybe in a week or two when she is real comfortable ill post a pic or two. But for now Im just letting her acclimate and get comfy.
