Somewhat Stinky Fuzzy Mice

qroberts Nov 19, 2005 04:18 PM

So I got a dozen fuzzy mice for my corn today and they have kind of a wierd odor.

I worked in a lab with mice before and they smell somewhat like soiled bedding. Is this because they are older and therefore have had more time to roll around in their own filth than pinkies? Or are they rotten?

Thanks for any replies.

I hve fuzzies and they smell fine. I recommend ... when in doubt throw it out... Or send it back to the store and let them know that there is a bad smell.

Fuzzies don't smell... There little coat of fur can't even hold oder's like adults can, probably a little oder but not much as adults. Just throw them out and get new ones, If the new ones smell the same as the group you threw away maybe thats just how they smell or theres something wrong with the supply.

Fuzzies most definitely can smell. And I mean smell without actually being bad.
I wouldn't be very trustworthy of the "stinking" fuzzies but I have had shipments that had a strong urine odor to them.
After thawing in water the odor dissipated.
If it's a rotten smell, throw them out. If it's more of a urine smell, thaw one in water and then see how bad it smells.
If the odor disipates they should be fine.
my 2 cents

dinnertime
sorry for the touch of blood in the pic

you know you could put some lettuce, slices of carrots, and black olives for garnishments and it would take away from the "touch of blood"....
i guess you could say i have a twisted sense of humor, i have a friend that when he was in beauty school, he had a manikan head and he had to fix her hair, while he was gone i put the head on a plate and put lettuce around it with carrots and black olives, and laid a knife and fork on each side of the head, then took pictures......ROTF

I thaw them in water and when they are thawed I fold them in paper towels and pat/squeeze off the excess water.
This can sometimes cause a little blood to escape.

I think thawing in hot tap water is the best and easiest way to go.
Just run tap water as hot as it will get, fill a container with the warm tap water and throw in the feeders.
They will be thawed and ready to go in around 15 minutes.
Thawed, warm, clean and easy to swallow.
I have tried heating under a lamp and have had them almost cook. They have a tendency to burst when warmed this way.
I tried warming them by just leaving them out at room temperature but that takes way too long to get them completely thawed.
I also tried putting them in a baggie and floating them in warm water. This was worse then any other method. In the bag they basically steamed and any urine odors or simple mouse odors were intensified and the feeders were almost unusable.

Thanks to Jimmy I now drop my rodents straight in a cup of hot water. Much better then the plastic bag. It's faster, with little to no smell.

Beautiful snake, Jimmy.

So, even if you submerge the baggie in the water, there's a problem?

I do that with pinkies with no problem. Does it not work with bigger mice or adults?

did you heat or thaw them sometimes they get an odor from the heating if not return

qroberts Nov 20, 2005 10:25 AM

I'm going to rinse and thaw one later in the week and see how it smells. If it wasn't for this god forsaken cold I could probably tell the difference between rot and urine more easily.

We'll see how it goes. If they still stink after a washing, then I'm going to return them. If not, bon apetit!

Interesting draybar, thats a lot of mice... If I were to do that it would get WAY too smelly so I thaw 5 or 6 mice and/or rats every hour so everyone gets to eat without the house being stink. I have 200 or so fuzzies and thaw out 5 a week and they have never had any oder so thats why I was under the impression that they simply just don't smell just like pinkys. Probably the stench of urine/bedding is probably on it but I never smell it.

I have had more odor from a certain supplier then the one I am using now but there can still be some odor sometimes.
It is usually most prevelant when I first open the bags upon arrival.
I usually separate shipments into about two weeks worth of feedings per size.
No doubt about it, though, if there is an unpleasent odor (other then mouse smell) after the fuzzies are thawed they should be tossed.
