Does Everyone Have A Snake Room??? Please Respond

Malesh02 Nov 19, 2005 04:50 PM

How do you all keep your snakes at the right temp? Meaning, how do you regulate the ambient temp of the area in which your snakes are located? Raise the over all temp of your home? Dedicate a room specifically for your animals? Basically, what kind of overall set up does everyone use?

Thanks in advance.

Ive got a shed in the backyard of my house that has been insulated, has AC unit, alarm, heater, lights.....

My temps now stay around 75-80 at night and 80-85 day. I live in florida so I dont have to worry too much about anything but the heat! It gets cold but not anything a small heater from walmart wont fix.

Ive been very pleased with it over all. Im quickly outgrowing it but................

I have a room just for my herps. I dont heat the room any differently then the rest of the house thou. I heat all of my cages and racks, which in turn heat the room up a bit higher then the rest of the house. All cages and racks run with flexwatt heat tape on thermostats. I've basically had the same set up for about 5 or more years and its always worked out very well, so I have never changed anything.

So if my house temp is set at 71, is that to low? Meaning, will the heat from my racks allow for adequate ambient temp? Seems like I may need another heat source.

I've got a Ball room for just ball pythons for their needs/heat/etc and another larger snake room for everything else (30 or so pythons/boas/cols)....

For both I use a humidifier in the winter and space heaters.

I've always had a separate space for just them, so I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to share with them!

I have a shed for my bigger bad A$$ snakes (Mostly Viperidae,Boidae, some adders) but mainly my good guys (bP's, corns, kings etc.) stay with me in my bed room since its rather large, I don't mind the company infact I prefer them being with me.

We have a dedicated snake room it's at the same temperature as the rest of our house. Our snakes are in enclosed racks so the heat stays pretty much within the rack and I don't seem to have much temperature fluxuation. Much less fluxuation from when they were in tanks.

We have a 10ft X 20ft bldg. that is insulated with heat & air unit. Freedom Breeder ball python racks have heat strips as well. The room is usually kept at 82-83 degrees. When breeding season comes ( Oct. - Nov) I lower the room temps to low 70's to 78 degees. I also cut off the heat tape on the freedom breeders on a cycle starting off at 7PM and back on at 6AM. Given about two weeks of the cycle, then the breeding introductions begin. Read all you can find and do your research!

My 6 drawer boaphile snake rack is in my living room. I live in an Apt in NY and I dont have extra space to spare. It does'nt look bad though,,,, have a huge plant on top for decoration. Have it hooked up to a Helix so the temps in the rack are pretty stable. I check everyday with my temp gun and it is always 90 hot side and 80 cold side year round. No problems,,,, healthy, happy and hungry ball pythons.

I added an oil-filled space heater to the room when the ambient temps of my single boaphile were getting too low for comfort. Now the temps are perfect!

What do you keep the ambient air temp at?

JaredAren Nov 20, 2005 04:58 PM

We have a "snake room" that has its own baseboard heater that is controlled by a digital proportional thermostat. It allows us to control the ambient well and allows for programming temp drops at night and during breeding season. Our snake racks are heated with flexwatt controlled by helix thermostats. When not in the breeding season our ambient room temp is kept at 79F degrees, which means that the cool end of the tubs are slighlty warmer than this. We keep our hotspots at 88F.
