We got Eggs! But I have a question

SecretSReptiles Nov 19, 2005 05:29 PM

Our crested female just laid two nice looking eggs. I light candled them and I saw one egg was just plan yellow inside and the other was white. Looked like it was solid. Not so clear to see anything inside. Does that mean any of those two eggs are bad?

Here's what the eggs look like now. The female was in with a male for a while. We took her out last week with our old male and in with a younger male. Could these eggs be from last weeks male or this weeks male? lol
Good eggs or not good eggs? The dark spot was dirt on the egg. I used a Q-tip to take off the dirt.

it's kind of hard to tell with crested eggs if they're fertile or infertile if you don't have a comparison fertile egg.
i would stick them in an incubator and let them go for awhile, they will likely mold within a couple of weeks if they are bad.
if they are good they will not mold.
if you candle them again, look for a small red vein running through the egg, that will indicate if it is fertile or not.

One egg had a REALLY tiny red vessel going threw, but the other egg just looked solid. Like a hard boiled egg like. No light was able to shin threw it.

i've never successfully candled an egg, yet all eggs that were laid this year hatched.

just put your eggs aside and watch them. you'll have a better idea in a few weeks whether or not the egg is fertile.

the only time a fertile egg will mold whatsoever is if it is in a dirty incubation medium, or it starts to seep a couple of days before it hatches. the only time i've ever seen it is a tiny bit of fuzz around the stretch marks on the bottom side of the egg.
i've been using this style of light for candling, it's a high intensity LED so it doesn't heat up at all.
it's called a stylus streamlight, the newer ones come with a little rubber tip that the eggs seem to fit on quite nicely ( and blocks out the light from the sides)
