Not using her hides?

quantim0 Nov 19, 2005 07:03 PM

I have had this BP for about a week now, and I have noticed that a lot of the time she is not in her hide on the warm side of the cage. She is hanging out between the side of the cage and her hide. This is a pretty tight spot, but she's jamming herself in. Is this because my hides are not offering enough security? The hides are way taller then the snake, but are definitely dark. I noticed today that one of her eyes was wrinkled in so I soaked her (fixed problem) and added a humid hide. Still the same problem though. Any ideas??

What is the temperature inside the hide - if it is directly over or under a heat source it could be too warm inside. Also if it's rather tall or too big (instead of a tight fit) - it could be that she isn't feeling secure inside - if you can't replace it with something smaller, try cutting it down or pack it a bit with newspaper or substrate to tighten it up.

The reason (IMO) is because she isn't feeling safe, BP's love to cram themself into tight fitting places so they can feel secure. You can help by giving her another hide thats tighter, a perfect and cheap example would be a cut in half cereal box. She/he will jam himself in there and most likely feel securer. If he goes in the cereal box it can be easily replaced.

I have a water dish that's undercut on the side, and that side faces the side of the aquarium. Sometimes, my ball python will crawl into that little undercut space. It's really a perfect spot for her. The open space defined by the edge of the aquarium, the side of the dish, and the substrate is about the same size that she is.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
