Sad story... Off topic

candb Nov 20, 2005 10:54 AM

Well about 4 months ago a cat showed up at my house, and it always tried to come inside, but we couldnt let it in because we have other cats, and so it always has lived in front of our house and we feed it and everything well about a month ago we noticed she was pregnant, and we were going to be letting her in soon when we expected her to give birth, but this morning i was on the phone and i looked in my front yard to see a cat laying died on the other side of the road i immediatly ran over with a few bags, and sadly it was "ours" it had been hit by a car and was severly bad looking, it made me feel so bad that we didnt let it inside, so i took the cat and rinsed it off then dug about a 3 1/2 foot deep hole and laid some boards down then i put the cat in a few bags and i layed it on top and then i put the bowl with cat food that we fed it in, in another bag and placed it inside and then i buried the cat "strike" and made a cross and layed flowers down. Just wanted to share my sad day.

aww! i'm so sorry you had to experience this. but with other cats in your house you had to consider them. strays tend to carry diseases. i would feel just like you are now if i was attached to a stray like that. that is very sad also that she was pregnant.
i recently had to put my oldest cat to sleep and its very hard to deal with the loss.
you did the nicest and kindest thing to respect her body and burry her like you did. please take comfort in that. i wish there were more cat lovers out there to go out of their way like you did.
i wish also people would spay/neuter and keep their cats inside so as to not have stories like this.

Thank you. The cat also when we found it i was petting it and realized a bump, well someone must have had shot it with a bbgun and the bb was in the skin and you could move it around. Its just so sad people would do something like that. I just cant believe that cat was hit by a car because ive never even seen it cross the road

Sad thing is, that this cat may be a sister to one of my cats i currently have because my sister had lived here for a while and her cat got out and then ended up pregnant and then one day she came back and was skinny and we looked for the babys and found them under some wood and brush and we think we may not have found one of them, which would have been the cat that just passed

that is very possible. feral cats tend to breed like crazy. as young as 8 month to a year old. i have raised a few litter of kittens just so they wouldn't end up feral. we managed to trap the mama cats and got them spayed then released them.
we found a kitten not to long ago we think we from a feral litter but it was so tame. a few days later i saw a male that looked just like the kitten so i'm sure it was the daddy. i wish people would realize cats are much better off as indoor cats. the life span for an outside is approx 3 years. not long at all. but inside they can live into their 20's. i just put to sleep my 22 year old kitty 3 weeks ago. hardest thing i ever did but she had a good long life as an indoor cat.

Ya, they should be kept inside, i have three indoor cats. I have a female Himalayan which is 14 years old, a female Birman which i found in a "swamp" which is about 3 or 4 years old, and a female white pawed tabby which is 8 months old

Sorry for the loss, but do you realize how many MILLIONS of native birds and reptiles are killed by these exotic predators (outdoor and feral cats) in each state of the US each year? Outside/feral cats are no different than the brown snake of Guam - they are ecological disasters that have contributed to the local extinction of some species.

I'm sorry for your sadness, but cats don't belong outside. Tragic events like this can happen. If they don't, though, ecological tragedy still occurs as long as they are alive. It's a lose:lose situation.

I'm not a cat hater (though I despise FERAL cats that are harming our wildlife!), but I do wish the fine for having or releasing a cat outdoors was the cost of an arm and a leg.

I 100% agree with you, cats do not belong outside, as they do contribute to the deaths of many species. All cats should be kept inside but with the amount of cats that are already out there its hard to solve that problem if they just keep breeding. I would never let a cat outside.

That is sad. Sorry that you had to go through that.

I seem to be a magnet for sick, hurt and lost animals. (sigh........)
I have over 30 critters in my home at the moment. Almost all of them are rescues with horrible backgrounds. It is not unusual for me to spen a month's salary at the vet's office on a stray cat.

Right now I have 13 healthy, vaccinated, fixed cats living with me. They are the most grateful creatures you'll ever know.

This makes it all worth it.......

Bless your heart for caring for the kitty while you could.
